A Durga temple idol was vandalised in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh. In this incident, the locals arrested a young man and handed him over to the police.
The incident occurred at a Durga temple in Niamatpur village of Shahzadapur union of Sarail upazila on July 20.
The accused arrested is Khalil Mia, 36, a resident of Chatipara village in Nasirnagar Upazila.
Niamatpur Sarvajanin Durga Temple President Jagdish Das said at night Khalil Mia suddenly started vandalising the temple’s idol, sparking anger and discontent among members of the local Hindu community.
At one point, locals chased him down and assisted the police in apprehending him.
Brahmanbaria Police Superintendent Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said Khalil had not disclosed the reason behind his action. “He is currently under interrogation. Khalil is accused in multiple cases. The matter will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken.
Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sarail police station, said Khalil had visited his sister’s house in Niamatpur village. Due to quarrels with some local people, he vandalised 5/6 idols of the Durga temple. Niamat Sarvajanin Durga Mandir President Jagdish Das filed a case under Sarail Police Station under the Hurting to Religious Sentiments and Speedy Trial Act.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner received the news of idol vandalism in the temple that night. Local administration officials, including DC Shahgir Alam and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, visited the spot.
