The gravest bane of India is its innumerable political parties and leaders, and yet many dejected, disillusioned and
misled politicians, irrespective of their merit and talent, often break away from their parties at the drop of a hat and float new outfits. Now Jayalalithaa’s niece, Deepa Jayakumar, with a frantic desire to acquire a political slot and pursue the legacy of Amma, has floated a new party and has declared to contest the ensuing by-elections from R K Nagar in Chennai. Strangely, there are people who have come out to support him. Since neither the politicians nor the public will change their attitude, we need a law to curb this pernicious trend.
    T T SAKARIA, Delhi
Civic Polls Showed the Mood of People
(BJP’s ‘Mayor Stroke’, March19); This refers to the article titled BJP’s ‘Mayor Stroke’ by Devidas Deshpande in Organiser. The results of the local bodies’ election in Maharashtra are a huge relief for the BJP and equally a
setback for the Congress and other
parties who had been cornering the BJP on demonetisation. The Congress and the National Congress Party (NCP) have suffered huge losses in terms of tally in various local bodies. The verdict is a setback for the Shiv Sena
particularly in the sense that in spite of being an ally of the BJP and sharing power with it in the State and at the Centre, it has been singing the Opposition’s tune in attacking the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and his policies and decisions, including demonetisation and surgical strikes. By giving majority to none and almost equal seats to the Shiv Sena and the BJP in the BMC, the people’s message for both is that you cannot be friends and foes at the same time; come together and work for the good of Mumbai.

Sweeping Victory

Coming close on the heels of Odisha
panchayat elections where the BJP stood second after the Biju Janata Dal, the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation
elections have added another cap to the BJP’s party cap. The results of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election and that of nine other civic
bodies in Maharashtra show that the BJP’s popularity is on the rise while that of the Congress is on its way to extinction. The results of the civic polls of the two states will provide a boost to the BJP.
    SAGAR SINGH, Delhi
House for everyone under BJP
The Modi Government’s commitment to provide housing to all, especially to the families below the poverty line is commendable. In particular the Government’s scheme to subsidise the cost up to one lakh rupees to 1.5 lakh with subsidy of three per cent interest on loans is laudable. This move is in line with Mahatma Gandhi’s dream to reach to the poor. The lopsided development undertaken during the UPA regime will now undergo an image makeover and also generate employment.

Sleeping Media

The Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand elections results have clearly shown that the media miserably failed to perceive the Modi tsunami. Not even a single media house, a news channel, a newspaper or a journalist could foresee it. All pre-election analyses talked of absence of any wave. They could not gauge the mood of the people. This disconnect must make the Indian journos sit back and ponder over what went wrong with their senses of sight and smell. I, for one, guess that most reporters and correspondents resort to desk writing based more on imagination as per their political predilections and prejudices rather than extensive talks and interviews with people at large, particularly the poor and the downtrodden, which is most essential in any pre-election coverage. Moreover, objectivity has taken a back seat with most of the journos. They have all but forgotten the immortal words of C P
Scott — “Comment is free, but facts are sacred”. They must realise that this state of affairs is hitting hard their credibility.
    AJAY MITTAL, Meerut City

SC restored peoples’ faith in Democracy
(The Saga of Suspense, February 26); Apropos to the article titled ‘The sage of Suspense’ by T S Venkatesan in Organiser. Expressing deep concern about the escalating corruption in the society, Justice Roy has rightly observed that Sasikala’s case was ‘startling’ in the way corruption was carried out by the accused persons with sheer impunity. The judgment proves Indian’s willingness to nip off the
menace of corruption. Such judgment deepens our belief in Judiciary and assures that ‘justice is still there’. At last the SC has restored the peoples’ faith in
democracy. The delay of eight months, in delivering the judgment, referred to in the opinion, is an important
contributor to the fluid political climate. Everyone was aware that Sasikala has disproportionate wealth to her income. It seems AIADMK is now dead and would not rise up in Tamil Nadu. Considering the huge amount of money being used for personal purposes Sasikala’s case has some serious
implications and since it is not handled expeditiously, sets a wrong precedent. She has never contested any election and directly wanted to be the CM. She had thrown Jayalatithaa’s loyalist O Panneerselvaam from the party and included her family member in the party. This clearly shows her nepotism and she wanted to capture AIDMK party in her hand. Corruption in high places is a malaise that is easy to
diagnose but difficult to cure.

New Hope for Jharkhand
The two-day Momentum Jharkhand Investors Summit 2017 is an ambitious project that will change the face of the State from being backward to join the elite league of developed states. Even if fifty per cent of the goals are converted, it will come as a major boost for its people and the Raghubar Das government. With support from the Centre the State is poised to become the most sought after investment
destination. Lack of infrastructure and Maoism are perhaps the two major barriers for the government, which must be handled carefully.
