JALGAON: A police case has been registered after two groups clashed and allegedly pelted stones at each other during a household Ganesh immersion procession in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, leaving two to three people injured, officials said.
The incident occurred late on September 20 in Raver town when an argument over a road being blocked escalated into a confrontation between the two groups. The dispute broke out while a family was taking a household Ganesh idol for immersion.
Argument over road obstruction escalates
According to preliminary information, the altercation began over the obstruction of a road. The disagreement soon escalated, with members of the two groups allegedly engaging in stone-pelting, resulting in injuries to two to three people.
The incident was reported from the Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nagar and Raza Colony areas of Raver. Police were alerted following the confrontation, and teams reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
Officials said two to three people sustained injuries in the stone-pelting. Details regarding the nature and severity of their injuries were not immediately available.
Police case registered in Raver
The Raver police registered a case after 11 p.m. in connection with the incident. The case includes charges related to rioting and stone-pelting, along with provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, officials said.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the confrontation and establish the sequence of events during the Ganesh immersion procession. Authorities are also working to identify those allegedly involved in the stone-pelting and determine their individual roles in the incident.
Additional security deployed
Following the clash, a tense situation prevailed in the affected areas, officials said. Additional police personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation and maintain law and order. Police are continuing to investigate the incident and gather information about the dispute between the two groups.
