The recent developments in Tamil Nadu during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and murti visarjan processions, with chantings and incidents reported from different places, have opened up a growing concern about respecting Hindu sentiments and intolerance against Hindu traditions and their festive celebrations.
Intruding into a Ganesh murti visarjan procession in Aruppukkottai on September 16, objecting to chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and playing drums, and threatening bomb blasts on September 17 in Srivilliputhur, along with the statement, “We will do whatever we want”, allegedly made by some fundamentalist youths, have caused real concern and raised questions about the handling of law and order by the CM C Joseph Vijay-led TVK government in Tamil Nadu.
Only recently, a Jharkhand youth was held for having a fake Army ID card, while the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a 19-year-old youth for allegedly radicalising youths to embrace Al Qaeda ideologies in Coimbatore. All these incidents put together, as feared by many, have raised concerns that Tamil Nadu is inching back to becoming a haven for fundamentalist forces nurtured during the DMK and continued now under the present TVK regime as part of minority appeasement and vote-bank politics.
A netizen, in a post on X, said, “‘Nara-e-Takbir… Allahu Akbar’ slogans were allegedly raised as a group attempted to confront Hindus during a peaceful Ganesh Chaturthi procession. Meanwhile, the TN Police appeared to intervene against the Hindu devotees. Palladam, near Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Is even one peaceful day of Hindu celebration too much to tolerate?”

A Hindu Munnani post claimed that Muslims tried to assault Hindus by raising slogans of ‘Allahu Akbar’ in an aggressive tone in Palladam, and that the police, instead of acting against them, only silenced the voices of Hindus.
In another video, a Muslim man can be heard arguing with a police officer and saying tenaciously, “We’ll do whatever we want”, openly threatening the police. The post questioned why there was so much opposition to a Ganesh Chaturthi procession that takes place just once a year and said, “In a Hindu-majority nation, why is there so much opposition to a Ganesh Chaturthi procession that takes place just once a year? Apparently, even one day of peaceful Hindu celebration is too much for some.”

The post further said that the manner and tone of speaking was an indication that some group was backing him, arguing that otherwise an individual could not speak to the police in such a threatening, authoritative and assertive manner.
Instead of condemning and regretting the threat of throwing bombs, Tamil Nadu Tawheet Jamaath deputy general secretary A Syed Ali supported the behaviour of the youths in Srivilliputhur, according to the claims made in the post. He wanted action against Intelligence Section (IS) officer Rajalingam for leaking the video in the public domain and questioned how the video reached the Hindu outfits. “Top police officials should conduct a probe into this. It is not an ordinary issue; we need a thorough probe,” he said. The post questioned the response, arguing that the concern appeared to be about the leak of the audio rather than the threat of throwing bombs.

In another incident, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a shop in Koomapatti near Srivilliputhur. Sanghi Prince, in a post on X, said, “Since the juice preparation took time, the rowdies threw a petrol bomb into the store, says the news. Yesterday a person threatened to throw a bomb over ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogan. Now this. These guys make it sound like making bombs is easy. Will Vijay nip this in the bud?”

Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathi said that law and order had been worsening in the State and questioned how elements could throw petrol bombs because the preparation of juice was delayed.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran wanted a thorough probe into the Srivilliputhur incident. Condemning the police for releasing the Muslim youths involved in the incident, he demanded that the TVK government thoroughly investigate those who openly threatened, “A bomb will explode in Srivilliputhur!”
“I was deeply shocked to see a video in which two young men threaten, even in front of police personnel, ‘If you chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai, a bomb will explode in Srivilliputhur’,” he said.

Nainar Nagendran wondered who had emboldened them to issue such terrorist-like threats in the presence of surrounding police personnel. He said this raised suspicions about whether some terrorist organisation was operating behind the scenes to turn Tamil Nadu’s youth into anti-nationals. He further said that, in a situation where the two young men were reportedly taken in for questioning by the police under the pretext of an investigation and then released, the police must properly and thoroughly investigate their backgrounds as well as their extremist ideologies.
Furthermore, on behalf of the TN BJP, he strongly urged the government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to take appropriate action to ensure that Tamil Nadu’s security faced no threats whatsoever.
Referring to the Srivilliputhur incident, Narayanan Thirupathi said, “Police detained Mohammed Asraf and Rahul Fayaz, who objected to chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai and threatened to carry out a bomb explosion, and took them to the police station. Police also detained Mohammed Asiq, Nasruddin, Bal Mastan and Sheik Mohammed under preventive detention. All of them were released on station bail.”
He said, “Can’t it be a violation of law to object to the majority people practising their religious worship? Don’t beat drums, no chanting of Bharat Mata Ki Jai, do not pass through the street located near mosques. Did the police understand these first steps of religious fanaticism? Did the Jamaat condemn the incident that took place inside a mosque? Where did they get the courage to say bombs will explode?”
He further said another shocking aspect was that some fundamentalist outfits, such as Indian Tawheet Jamat and India National Muslim League, had issued a notice questioning how the video was leaked while mincing words on the threats. He said they had jointly announced with Srivilliputhur Jumma New Mosque a programme on September 18 evening near the clock tower seeking action against police officer Rajalingam.
“If we want action against the men who threatened bombing, they want action against the police officer. Is it not an act of intimidating the police? Is it not blatant religious bigotry? These forces are trying to pressurise the government and the police?” he asked.
He said the police should probe who was behind the incident, the role of any other outfits and whether they had been involved in any anti-social and illegal activities earlier. He urged the TVK government to set up a SIT to probe the incident immediately. Till the probe report was completed, he demanded adequate protection for Hindu leaders, the temple and IS officer Rajalingam.

Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara C Subramaniam, in a statement, warned that the Srivilliputhur bombing threat was a signal for Tamil Nadu about what he described as Islamic terrorism rearing its head robustly. He said that while immersion processions were being conducted in a disciplined manner, reports of Muslims creating a ruckus in the procession were an alarm bell for all.
Recalling the Srivilliputhur incident, Subramaniam said that youths had issued bomb threats in the presence of policemen. While appreciating the police action, he said releasing them later was not acceptable and raised a doubt about whether the police had succumbed to pressure from the top and the government.
He said that due to political pressure, the police could not take action in such incidents and recalled that, in the past, a lethargic attitude had resulted in the Coimbatore serial bomb blast and car bomb explosion. He said both the government and police should not forget this.
In Aruppukkottai, Muslim youths allegedly trespassed into a procession and warned a Hindu Munnani functionary of dire consequences. Subramaniam said that had the police acted as per law, the Srivilliputhur incident would not have happened. He said objecting to chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai and naming the police officer showed, according to him, religious intolerance and hatred towards Hindus.
He urged the government to initiate stern measures with an iron hand to contain these activities before they went out of hand.
