Renowned Telugu litterateur and historical novelist Dr Mudigonda Sivaprasad, popularly known as the ‘Emperor of Historical Novels’, passed away on October 8, at the age of 86, in Hyderabad.

Having devoted more than six decades to Telugu literature, Sivaprasad made a distinctive contribution to the historical novel genre. His speciality lay in presenting history not merely as a collection of dates, kings and wars found in textbooks, but as a living narrative filled with characters and conflicts. With the aim of making history accessible and easy to understand through storytelling, he authored numerous novels.

He conducted extensive research into ancient Greek literature, drama and philosophy and wrote authoritative works on these subjects.

Against the historical backdrop of Amaravati, he wrote six novels. Having also studied Christianity, he authored eight books under the title ‘Christian Ashtakam’.

His published works include ‘Kakatiya Kala Darshanam’, ‘Amritodayam’, the first historical novel on the Musunuri emperors, ‘Pakala Cheruvu Kathalu’ and the essay collection ‘Vignana Vipanchi’, among others. In total, 136 books were published under his name.

Sivaprasad was born on December 23, 1940, in Alluru village of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh. He was married, but his wife passed away several years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Sushma and Sreelekha, and a son, Indu Sekhar.

He recalled Sivaprasad’s efforts to foster interest among Telugu readers in the country’s history, culture and traditions.
