Amid the ongoing police drive against drugs in Keralam, Congress leader and former Thodupuzha municipal chairman Saneesh George was arrested on the night of September 16 while allegedly using MDMA drugs in Idukki district. George, who served as the municipal chairman for four and a half years, was reportedly found in the company of a friend, with police seizing a drug syringe from him.

When the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government took over, Home Minister and Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala declared Operation Thoofan to curb the drug menace.

When he declared it, he might not have had a remote imagination that his own party leader was going to fall into the trap. But it happened: Saneesh George, Congress leader and former municipal chairman of Thodupuzha municipality, Idukki district, has been nabbed while using MDMA. He was caught while using MDMA, the worst sort of chemical drug.

Saneesh George was caught on September 16 night. Now, he is in Kaliyar police station. After the preliminary investigation, police have found that Saneesh George is a regular consumer of drugs. Police have reportedly seized the drug syringe from him. He was in the company of a friend.

Earlier, he was booked for a bribery case, hence he had to resign as the Thodupuzha Municipality chairman in 2024. He had fought the election as a rebel UDF candidate. He was elected as the municipal chairman with the support of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). He was booked for receiving a bribe for giving a Fitness Certificate for a school.

Later on, Saneesh George returned to Congress. But Congress did not give him a party ticket to contest the local self-government bodies election in December 2025. Police have reportedly stated that some time back a case was registered against Saneesh George for possessing cannabis.

These days, Keralam faces grave trouble from drug trafficking, sale and consumption. Police, voluntary organisations and thousands of ordinary people have been trying to put an end to the drug menace.
