A humanoid robot testing session in eastern China’s Zhejiang province has attracted widespread attention after footage showed a robotic machine suddenly moving towards an engineer and kicking the remote control from his hand. The incident, recorded in Shaoxing on September 7, 2026, has triggered a fresh debate on social media over the development and safety of increasingly sophisticated humanoid robots.
The security camera footage, timestamped at 11:39:49 on September 7, shows an engineer operating a remote-controlled humanoid robot inside what appears to be an office or workshop containing robotic equipment and storage cases. After the engineer initiated the programme, the robot rapidly moved into action before turning towards him.
The humanoid robot then made an attack-like movement and kicked its leg towards the engineer. The kick struck the remote control in his hand, sending it flying across the room. The engineer subsequently moved around the robot while attempting to retrieve the controller.
The robotic machine then appeared to make another aggressive movement, jumping into the air and delivering a second kick. Following the sequence, the humanoid robot bent forward in what appeared to be a bowing gesture, resembling a martial arts fighter after completing a move.

The footage subsequently spread widely across social media, where users reacted to the robot’s remarkably coordinated movements. Several Chinese netizens compared the humanoid robot’s actions to Wing Chun, a traditional Chinese martial art, while others focused on the fact that the machine remained under programmed control rather than possessing independent consciousness.
Combat-style robotics raises questions over machine control
The incident has drawn particular attention because of the physical capabilities demonstrated by the humanoid robot. The machine was able to coordinate movements involving its legs, body and upper frame while responding rapidly during the testing session.
The footage has prompted social media users to question why humanoid and robotic systems are being developed with movements that resemble combat techniques. The discussion comes as robotics companies increasingly focus on machines capable of walking, balancing, jumping, lifting objects and performing complex physical movements.
The robot involved has been identified as a machine developed by Chinese robotics company Unitree. Founded in 2016, Unitree has expanded its operations in the humanoid robotics sector and has reportedly produced around 18,000 humanoid robots by July.
The circumstances behind the robot’s sudden movements remain unclear. The available footage shows the machine operating in a controlled testing environment, but does not establish whether the sequence resulted from a technical malfunction, a programming issue or another problem involving the remote-control system.
The incident has nevertheless fuelled a broader social media conversation about robotic technology, machine control and the rapid development of humanoid robots capable of increasingly complex physical movements.
