New Delhi: Hindi is more than a means of communication it is a reflection of India’s cultural identity, shared values and emotional diversity. As the country celebrates Hindi Diwas today, the language is increasingly finding new space not only in literature and public life but also in technology, social media, digital education and artificial intelligence.
Hindi Diwas is observed every year on September 14 to commemorate the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the Union. Today, Hindi ranks among the world’s most widely spoken languages and is the first language of more than 520 million people.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, extending greetings on the occasion, highlighted the expanding influence of Hindi across literature, journalism, cinema, television, education and the digital world. He said the growing importance of the internet, social media, digital education, technology and artificial intelligence has opened new opportunities for Indian languages.
Birla also underlined the changing character of Hindi, describing it as an increasingly effective medium for knowledge, science, technology and modern expression. The message comes at a time when linguistic communication is rapidly evolving beyond traditional print and broadcasting into digital platforms and emerging technologies.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted citizens on Hindi Diwas and stressed the role of Hindi in mass communication, good governance and strengthening national unity. He noted that, alongside other Indian languages, Hindi is increasingly becoming part of the language of technology and research.
Shah will attend the Hindi Diwas 2026 programme and the sixth All India Official Language Conference in Navi Mumbai today. The two-day event is expected to bring together scholars, litterateurs, academics, parliamentarians, senior government officials and other prominent personalities to deliberate on strengthening Hindi as an official, common and link language while maintaining greater synergy with India’s other linguistic traditions.
During the inaugural session, Shah will also present the Rajbhasha Gaurav and Rajbhasha Kirti Awards for 2025-26, recognising outstanding contributions to the field of official language.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in his Hindi Diwas message, described Hindi as an expression of India’s culture, civilisation and values. He emphasised its ability to bring the country’s immense diversity together and called upon citizens to preserve, promote and strengthen Hindi, particularly in emerging areas such as knowledge, science, technology and innovation.
The significance of Hindi Diwas today therefore extends beyond remembering a constitutional milestone. It reflects a larger challenge and opportunity for Indian languages: how to preserve their cultural depth while ensuring that they remain relevant in a rapidly digitising world.
