Toronto, Canada: The Hindu Sikh Unity Forum Canada (HSUFC) has described its interaction with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat in Toronto as “a meeting of hearts, a dialogue of trust and a commitment to harmony”, saying the candid exchange reaffirmed the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and seva in strengthening Hindu-Sikh bonds.

According to a press release issued by HSUFC, core volunteers and members of the forum had the opportunity to meet and interact with Dr Bhagwat on September 1 during the Canada leg of his three-country outreach marking the centenary of the RSS.

The forum said the interaction was particularly significant because of its openness and candid nature. “There were no scripted questions or avoided subjects,” the press release said, adding that members engaged in a frank discussion on questions and concerns often raised about the RSS, its work in society and Hindu-Sikh relations.

“Dr Bhagwat listened and responded at length, emphasizing dialogue over assumptions and direct engagement over misconceptions,” it added.

HSUFC said Dr Bhagwat’s message throughout the interaction centred on “love, peace, harmony, character building and seva”. He spoke about the importance of diversity and remaining rooted in one’s respective faith and traditions.

The press release said Dr Bhagwat emphasised “becoming better Sikhs, better Hindus and, above all, better human beings”. It added that he stressed the importance of being “loyal, responsible and productive members” of the societies in which people live and contributing selflessly towards their progress and wellbeing.

The interaction also reflected upon the “deeply intertwined history, traditions and cultural bonds” of Hindus and Sikhs and explored ways to further strengthen these relationships through regular interaction and shared social initiatives.

The forum said Hindu-Sikh relations could be strengthened by “celebrating each other’s festivals and important occasions, serving society together and focusing on everything that unites rather than divides us”.

In a symbolic gesture reflecting Punjabi traditions, HSUFC members honoured Dr Bhagwat by offering him a Pagri, invoking the sentiment of “Pagg Vatt”, which the forum said has historically been associated with friendship, brotherhood, mutual honour and a bond of trust.

“It was our way of expressing a simple but powerful message: bridges are built when people meet, speak, listen and respect one another,” the press release stated.

The Hindu Sikh Unity Forum Canada also presented Dr Bhagwat with a Community Honour Award in recognition of his efforts towards “bringing communities together and promoting dialogue, harmony, unity and peace”.

The interaction formed part of Dr Bhagwat’s wider international outreach during the RSS centenary year. His three-country journey through the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom has focused on civilisational and cultural dialogue, people-to-people relationships, social harmony and sharing the organisation’s century-long experience of character building and seva.

Referring to the larger “Hindu Vishwa Bandhu – Embrace the World in Friendship” gathering held in Toronto, the forum said the event brought together more than 2,000 participants representing 175 organisations from all 10 provinces of Canada.

For HSUFC, the interaction reaffirmed what it described as a fundamental aspect of its mission: “to sit together, talk openly and understand one another”.

“Genuine dialogue dispels misconceptions. Mutual respect builds trust. Seva builds character. And relationships built through personal interaction can overcome distances that rhetoric often creates,” the press release said.

Calling it a day filled with “warmth, positivity, candid conversation and optimism for the future”, the Hindu Sikh Unity Forum Canada said it looked forward to continuing its work of building bridges between communities, strengthening Hindu-Sikh bonds and contributing towards a peaceful, harmonious and stronger Canada.

The forum summed up the spirit of the interaction with the message: “Different traditions. Shared values. Mutual respect. One commitment to humanity.”
