New York: A 32-year-old vice-president at Bank of America was fatally stabbed in New York City’s Times Square in what authorities described as a random and unprovoked attack, sending panic through one of Manhattan’s busiest tourist and commercial districts.

Erin Piacenti, who worked in Bank of America’s Business Selection and Conflicts unit, was one of two people stabbed during the broad-daylight attack on August 31 afternoon. The second victim, a 68-year-old man, was also wounded but survived. Police later shot and killed the woman accused of carrying out the attack after she refused repeated orders to drop two large knives and advanced towards officers.
Attack unfolded in crowded Times Square
The incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, an area normally packed with tourists, commuters, office workers and visitors. The attack prompted a major police and emergency response, temporarily disrupting activity in the heart of Midtown Manhattan.
According to the New York Police Department, officers were responding to reports of a woman armed with two knives and stabbing people along Seventh Avenue. Authorities have described the attack as random and unprovoked, with no indication that Piacenti was specifically targeted.
Police identified the alleged attacker as Pamela Cisneros, a 49-year-old woman from Queens. Investigators said she stabbed the 68-year-old man before attacking Piacenti. Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Piacenti later died from her injuries, while the male victim was initially reported to be in stable condition.
Police shoot attacker after confrontation
After the stabbings, officers confronted Cisneros in the vicinity of Times Square. Police said she was carrying two large knives and did not comply with commands to put them down.
Officers attempted to use a Taser to stop her, but the effort was unsuccessful. Authorities said Cisneros continued advancing towards officers while armed with the knives, prompting police to open fire. She was subsequently pronounced dead.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the initial investigation indicated that the attack was random and unprovoked. Police have also said Cisneros had a documented history of mental-health-related encounters, although authorities have not identified a clear motive for the attack. The police shooting itself is subject to an investigation, as is standard in cases involving officers using deadly force.
Erin Piacenti identified as Bank of America executive
Piacenti’s death was confirmed by Bank of America, where she had worked as a vice-president in the Business Selection and Conflicts team. The bank expressed shock and sadness over the killing, describing Piacenti as a valued member of its workforce.
Bank of America’s Manhattan office is located at One Bryant Park, just a short distance from Times Square. Piacenti had reportedly joined the company approximately 18 months before her death. Matthew Koder, the bank’s president of global corporate and investment banking, described her as a cherished teammate and friend in an internal message to employees. “Her loss is being felt deeply by many,” Koder said in the internal communication, according to Reuters.
The bank’s security teams are also working with police as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and review safety measures for employees working in the area.
Piacenti was also a trained lawyer. She graduated from Fordham Law School in 2021, with the institution confirming her death and expressing grief over the loss of its former student. She had previously graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and subsequently pursued her law degree before entering the corporate sector.
Reports also said Piacenti had recently celebrated her second wedding anniversary with her husband, Frank. She had reportedly purchased a home in Chester, New Jersey, adding to the sense of a young professional life abruptly cut short. Her death has drawn widespread attention because of both the randomness of the attack and the location where it occurred.
Times Square’s public-safety concerns
Known as the “Crossroads of the World,” Times Square is among New York City’s busiest public spaces, with hundreds of thousands of pedestrians passing through the area on a typical day. The attack therefore caused significant alarm in a location where tourists and workers routinely move through crowded streets and intersections.
The incident also comes amid continuing discussions over public safety in New York. While overall crime trends in the city have changed in recent years, high-profile acts of violence in heavily populated areas continue to generate concern among residents, workers and visitors.
For Bank of America employees working near Times Square, the attack has brought those concerns particularly close to home. The bank has said its security teams are engaged with authorities and are reviewing the safety and security of its offices and employees.
Investigation continues
Investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events, including what led Cisneros to attack the two victims and what happened immediately before officers confronted her. Authorities have not identified any connection between Piacenti and the attacker and have characterised the stabbing as random. There is also no indication at present that the incident was terrorism-related. The NYPD is separately examining the circumstances surrounding the police shooting of Cisneros.
For Piacenti’s family, colleagues and friends, however, the investigation follows the loss of a young professional whose life and career were cut short in an attack that unfolded without warning in one of the world’s most recognisable public spaces.
