Bhubaneswar: Security forces have recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition, explosive material and communication equipment from a concealed Maoist dump in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, in a major success for ongoing anti-Maoist operations in the region.

The recovery was made during a joint search and area-domination operation in Silkuta Reserve Forest under K. Balang police station limits. The operation was conducted by personnel of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) after security agencies received information during the interrogation of surrendered Naxals.

According to Rourkela Police, the concealed dump was found to be around four years old and contained arms, ammunition, explosives, communication equipment and other articles associated with Maoist activities.

Intelligence-based operation leads to recovery

The operation followed specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of a concealed Maoist dump in the forested area.

Rourkela Superintendent of Police Nitesh Wadhwani, in a post on X, said the information was obtained during the detailed interrogation of surrendered Naxals. Acting on the input, a joint DVF and BDDS team launched a search operation in Silkuta Reserve Forest under K. Balang police station.

During the search and area-domination exercise, the team detected the concealed dump and recovered a substantial quantity of operational material. The police described the recovery as a significant achievement in ongoing efforts to dismantle Maoist networks, disrupt their logistics and deny access to weapons, explosives and communication equipment.

AK-47, carbine and IED container seized

The cache included an AK-47 rifle, a CM 9mm 1A1 carbine, an IED container, detonators, magazines, ammunition and communication equipment.

According to details released by Rourkela Police, the recovered material included:

  • One AK-47 rifle
  • One CM 9mm 1A1 carbine
  • One IED container
  • 15 detonators
  • Two magazines
  • One Silling
  • One Motorola walkie-talkie
  • 20 rounds of 9mm ball ammunition
  • One Kaiweets KM100 digital multimeter
  • One battery charger
  • One walkie-talkie frequency device
  • Two walkie-talkie pouches and other pouches

The recovery of explosive-related material, ammunition and communication equipment from a concealed forest dump is considered significant because such material can provide security agencies with important leads about the logistical arrangements and movement of Maoist cadres.

Four year-old concealed dump located

Police said the dump had remained concealed in the forest for approximately four years. In his statement, SP Wadhwani said the joint team detected and recovered the hidden Maoist dump containing arms, ammunition, explosives, communication equipment and other Maoist camp-related articles.

The age of the dump indicates that the material may have been stored as part of an earlier Maoist logistical network operating in the area. Investigators are expected to examine the recovered articles to determine their possible links with Maoist activities and movements in the region.

The recovery also demonstrates the importance of intelligence gathered from surrendered cadres in identifying hidden arms and logistics caches in difficult forest terrain.

Odisha-Jharkhand coordination strengthens anti-maoist operations

The operation involved coordination between security personnel from Odisha and neighbouring Jharkhand, an area where Maoist groups have historically operated across forested and border regions. Security agencies have been intensifying operations in forest pockets along the Odisha-Jharkhand border to identify Maoist hideouts, disrupt their supply chains and prevent the movement and regrouping of cadres.

The recovery from Silkuta Reserve Forest is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to locate additional concealed dumps and other logistical facilities used by Maoist groups. Officials said the seizure could potentially disrupt access to weapons, ammunition, explosive material and communication equipment that may otherwise have been retrieved from the hidden location for operational purposes.

Communication equipment among recovered material

Apart from firearms and explosive-related material, security personnel recovered a Motorola walkie-talkie, a frequency device and pouches used for carrying communication equipment.

The presence of communication devices has drawn particular attention from investigators, who may examine the recovered material for possible clues regarding the communication network maintained by Maoist cadres in the region.

Police are also examining the seized articles to establish whether they can provide information about the activities, movement patterns or logistical arrangements of Maoist groups that operated in the forested areas.

Security forces intensify area domination

The recovery comes amid intensified anti-Maoist operations aimed at strengthening security in remote forest areas and dismantling underground networks. Area-domination operations are an important component of the security strategy in regions where difficult terrain and dense forests can provide Maoist cadres with opportunities to conceal weapons and other operational material.

The latest operation demonstrates the role of coordinated searches and intelligence-led action in locating such hidden caches. Officials said the recovery would help deny Maoist groups access to arms and logistical resources and could also provide investigators with leads for further operations.

Further searches expected

Security forces are likely to continue search operations in and around Silkuta Reserve Forest to ascertain whether additional arms, ammunition, explosives or other Maoist-related material have been concealed in the area.

Police are also examining the recovered material as part of efforts to establish its origin and possible links with Maoist networks operating in the region. The identities of individuals or cadres associated with the concealed dump have not been disclosed, and further details are awaited.

The latest recovery is being viewed as a significant operational success for security agencies working to dismantle Maoist infrastructure in the forested areas of northern Odisha and along the Odisha-Jharkhand border. Continued intelligence gathering, coordinated operations and area domination are expected to remain central to efforts to identify concealed Maoist resources and prevent their reuse.
