Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced a fresh set of digital initiatives, connectivity upgrades and customer offers ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day, with the state-owned telecom operator seeking to expand its network footprint while making mobile, broadband and entertainment services more accessible.

The announcements come as BSNL continues its efforts to strengthen its position in India’s competitive telecom market. The company said its latest initiatives are aimed at improving connectivity in urban as well as rural and remote areas, upgrading digital services and providing customers with additional benefits at competitive prices.

At the centre of the expansion plan is BSNL’s 4G rollout. The company said it has ordered more than 26,300 additional 4G Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites for deployment across the country.

The new sites are expected to expand BSNL’s 4G network in towns, villages and remote regions, where reliable mobile connectivity remains an important requirement for digital services, education, banking, healthcare and communication.

BSNL also said its existing 4G network has undergone comprehensive optimisation to improve coverage, data speeds, call quality and the overall customer experience.

The operator said its 4G network is based on an indigenous technology stack that has the capability to be upgraded to 5G, potentially providing a pathway for the company to transition towards the next generation of mobile connectivity.

More than 26,300 new 4G sites

The expansion of BSNL’s 4G network is one of the most significant components of the latest announcement.

The company has ordered more than 26,300 additional 4G BTS sites, which will be deployed across different parts of the country. The focus is not limited to major cities, with BSNL highlighting the need to strengthen connectivity in towns, villages and geographically difficult areas.

For a telecom operator with a nationwide footprint, expanding 4G coverage is crucial as customers increasingly depend on mobile networks for everything from digital payments and online education to entertainment and government services.

BSNL said the existing 4G network has also been optimised to address common customer concerns, including coverage, data speeds and voice call quality.

The company’s use of an indigenous technology stack is another important element of the expansion. BSNL has maintained that its 4G technology is designed with an upgrade path towards 5G, which could allow the network to evolve as demand for higher-speed connectivity increases.

The expansion also fits into the broader national emphasis on strengthening domestic telecom technology and reducing dependence on imported systems.

Re 1 freedom 2.0 offer for new customers

To mark Independence Day, BSNL has also introduced the Re 1 Freedom 2.0 offer for new customers.

Under the offer, subscribers will receive 1 GB of data every day, 100 SMS messages per day and unlimited voice calls.

The offer comes with a validity of 24 days.

The package is designed to attract new users by combining data, calling and SMS benefits in a single plan. With mobile data becoming an essential part of everyday life, affordable prepaid offerings remain an important tool for telecom companies seeking to attract and retain customers.

The offer also adds another promotional element to BSNL’s Independence Day campaign, which combines network expansion with direct consumer benefits.

While private telecom operators continue to compete aggressively on pricing, data allowances and bundled services, BSNL’s latest offer seeks to position the state-owned company as an affordable option for customers looking for a combination of voice and data benefits.

Fibre freedom plan offers 200 Mbps broadband

BSNL has also introduced a new broadband offering called the Fibre Freedom Plan.

The plan has been launched at a special introductory price of Rs 1,111 per month and offers internet speeds of up to 200 Mbps.

Subscribers will receive up to 5,000 GB of monthly data along with access to more than 25 premium OTT platforms.

The plan is aimed at households that increasingly use broadband connections not only for conventional internet browsing but also for streaming, online education, remote work, gaming and other high-bandwidth activities.

The inclusion of OTT platforms is particularly significant as broadband and entertainment services have increasingly become interconnected.

For consumers, a broadband plan that combines high-speed internet with entertainment subscriptions can reduce the need to purchase multiple services separately.

The 200 Mbps speed and 5,000 GB monthly data allowance also make the plan suitable for households with multiple connected devices.

As televisions, smartphones, tablets, computers and other smart devices become part of everyday household life, demand for high-speed and high-capacity broadband is expected to remain strong.

BSNL selfcare app gets a makeover

Alongside its network and tariff initiatives, BSNL has also focused on improving the way customers interact with the company.

The telecom operator has revamped its existing Selfcare mobile application and introduced it as “BSNL Selfcare New” for Android and iOS users.

The upgraded application brings several customer-service functions together in one platform.

Users can recharge prepaid connections, pay postpaid and landline bills, register complaints and track their status, manage Do Not Disturb preferences, view payment history and submit requests for Fibre connections.

The application also includes an AI chatbot and voice-search functionality.

Another feature is multiple-account management, which could be useful for customers managing several BSNL connections within a household or organisation.

The app also provides access to BSNL Entertainment TV, bringing entertainment services into the same digital platform used for account management.

The move is part of BSNL’s broader attempt to make routine customer interactions more digital and reduce dependence on physical service centres.

For customers, the ability to manage recharges, bills, complaints and service requests from a single application could make it easier to access BSNL services.

Free entertainment TV For BSNL mobile users

BSNL has also introduced a free entertainment service for its mobile subscribers.

Through BSNL Free Entertainment TV, customers can access around 500 live television channels at no additional cost through the new Selfcare application.

The service is powered by Tango TV and also offers on-demand entertainment content accessible through mobile devices.

The addition of television and on-demand content represents a shift in how telecom companies package their services.

Mobile operators are increasingly looking beyond basic connectivity and offering customers entertainment, digital content and other services as part of their overall ecosystem.

For BSNL, the free entertainment service could help increase the utility of its Selfcare application while giving mobile subscribers an additional reason to use the platform.

The service also brings television content directly to smartphones, allowing customers to access entertainment without being tied to a conventional television connection.

Satellite phone service for remote areas

BSNL has also highlighted its Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS), which uses satellite connectivity to provide voice communication in areas where conventional terrestrial mobile networks may not be available.

The service is particularly relevant to geographically challenging locations where setting up conventional mobile infrastructure can be difficult.

Remote and mountainous regions, disaster-affected areas and locations with limited terrestrial connectivity can face significant communication challenges.

Satellite-based communication can provide an alternative in such circumstances by connecting users through satellite networks rather than relying entirely on conventional mobile towers.

BSNL said the service is intended for locations where reliable communication is particularly important.

The initiative also reflects the broader role of telecom infrastructure in emergency response and connectivity in difficult geographical and climatic conditions.

47 extra days on Rs 2,399 annual plan

Existing prepaid customers are also part of BSNL’s Independence Day promotions.

Under another special offer, customers subscribing to the Rs 2,399 annual prepaid plan will receive 47 additional days of validity.

As a result, the validity of the plan will increase from 365 days to 412 days.

The existing benefits attached to the plan will continue.

The additional validity effectively extends the duration for which customers can use the annual plan without having to undertake another recharge.

Annual prepaid plans are particularly relevant for customers who prefer to make one large recharge rather than manage monthly renewals.

The additional 47 days also gives BSNL another promotional advantage during the Independence Day period, particularly among customers looking for longer-term prepaid options.

BSNL partners with polycab for indigenous manufacturing

BSNL has also entered into a partnership with Polycab to strengthen domestic telecom manufacturing.

Under the partnership, Polycab’s Electronic Manufacturing Services facility will manufacture telecom and networking equipment, including cameras, Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) and routers.

The collaboration is being positioned within the broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat framework.

The partnership will operate through a Hardware-as-a-Service, or HaaS, model.

BSNL said the model would allow telecom infrastructure to be deployed in a scalable and cost-effective manner while reducing the requirement for large upfront investments.

The arrangement could also strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity for telecom and networking equipment.

For BSNL, partnerships with Indian manufacturers can help create a more integrated domestic supply chain while supporting the wider objective of increasing indigenous production.

The manufacturing of equipment such as routers and ONTs is particularly relevant to the expansion of broadband services, where reliable customer-premises equipment is essential for delivering high-speed internet.

A wider push to strengthen BSNL’s digital footprint

The latest announcements combine several different elements of BSNL’s strategy, network expansion, affordable plans, digital customer services, entertainment, satellite connectivity and domestic manufacturing.

The immediate focus is on improving the customer experience while expanding the reach of the network.

The planned deployment of more than 26,300 additional 4G sites is aimed at strengthening mobile coverage, particularly in areas where connectivity remains a challenge.

At the consumer level, the Re 1 Freedom 2.0 offer and additional validity on the annual prepaid plan provide direct benefits to mobile users, while the Fibre Freedom broadband plan targets households seeking high-speed connectivity and bundled entertainment.

The revamped Selfcare application is intended to make service management more convenient, while the free entertainment service adds another digital offering to the platform.

The satellite phone service, meanwhile, addresses a different requirement, ensuring communication in locations where conventional telecom networks may not be available.

The Polycab partnership adds a manufacturing dimension to the overall strategy by focusing on Indian production of telecom and networking equipment.

Together, these initiatives indicate that BSNL is seeking to strengthen its role not simply as a traditional telecom operator but as a broader digital services provider.

The company said the initiatives are aimed at delivering affordable, secure and reliable digital services while expanding connectivity across the country.

BSNL also reiterated its commitment to improving connectivity in difficult geographical and climatic conditions and contributing to the government’s broader objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India.

The success of these initiatives will ultimately depend on their implementation, particularly the speed of 4G expansion, network quality, reliability of digital services and the ability to provide consistent customer support.

For consumers, however, the latest Independence Day package brings together one of BSNL’s largest network expansion efforts with a range of direct offers, digital services and entertainment benefits.

As India’s demand for mobile data, broadband and digital services continues to grow, BSNL’s latest push represents an effort by the state-owned telecom operator to strengthen its network, modernise its customer interface and compete more effectively in an increasingly digital telecom market.
