New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 announced a new free online coaching initiative for young Indians as part of a wider push to expand access to education and improve employment opportunities.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi said the government was working to create a network through which young people could receive online coaching without paying fees.
The initiative could provide relief to students and job aspirants who depend on coaching for competitive examinations and other career opportunities. Private coaching can be expensive, while students from smaller towns and rural areas may also have to spend money on travel and accommodation to access established coaching centres.
Digital access to coaching
The proposed network is expected to use digital platforms to make coaching available to a larger number of students. Instead of travelling to major education hubs or enrolling in costly private programmes, students could access learning material and coaching support online.

The announcement comes as digital education becomes an increasingly important part of academic preparation. Online classes recorded lectures and digital study material have already become widely used by students preparing for examinations.
However, the success of a free online coaching network will depend on the quality of courses, regular academic support and access to reliable internet services. Ensuring that students in remote and economically weaker areas can use the platform will also be important.
AI training for 1 crore youth
Alongside the coaching initiative, Modi announced a plan to provide artificial intelligence training to one crore young Indians.
The focus on AI comes amid rapid changes in the workplace, with businesses and institutions increasingly adopting artificial intelligence and other digital technologies. The government’s proposed skilling programme is aimed at helping young people develop capabilities that could be useful in the changing job market.
AI skills are becoming relevant across sectors, including technology, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, education and services. Training on a large scale could therefore help young people prepare for new employment opportunities and adapt to evolving workplace requirements.
Focus on education and employability
The two announcements place affordable learning and technology-based skilling at the centre of the government’s youth agenda.
The free coaching programme is aimed primarily at improving access to academic and competitive-exam preparation, while the AI initiative focuses on developing skills for the future economy. Together, they signal an attempt to use digital platforms to reach a much larger section of the young population.
The government is yet to provide detailed information on the implementation of the free coaching network and AI training programme. Details such as the launch date, participating institutions, courses, eligibility rules, certification and the platforms through which students can enrol are expected to determine how the initiatives are rolled out.
If implemented effectively, the programmes could help reduce the gap between students who can afford expensive coaching and those who cannot, while giving a large number of young Indians an opportunity to gain skills in one of the fastest-growing areas of technology.
