The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 13 locations across Tamil Nadu and Mizoram as part of its investigation into a suspected drug peddling and trafficking network

CHENNAI: The National Investigation Agency conducted simultaneous raids on August 12 at 13 locations. eight in Tamil Nadu and five in Mizoram.

The raids are are part of its ongoing probe into the seizure of 6,0178.87 kg of Methamphetamine valued at over Rs.35,000 crores from a Myanmmar registered boat at Andaman sea in November 2024 and the arrest of six Myanmmar nationals. an international drug trafficking network allegedly linked to Myanmmar.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) registered a case initially. NIA took up it from ICG to probe deeper into the wider network behind the illegal shipment of large quantity of narcotics contraband.

Reports say, searches were undertaken in five locations in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. NIA suspects links between those arrested and individuals in Tamil Nadu including possible connections with international drug trafficking networks operating from Myanmmar and neighbouring nations.  Based on the information provided by the arrested Burma nationals, NIA team carried out simultaneous raids at seven places in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. It is learnt that more than 10 sleuths of NIA involved in the intensive search at a private apartment complex in Indira Priyadharshini Nagar coming under Perumbakkam police station in Chennai.

Meanwhile, recently, police have arrested three more persons in connection with the seizure of 1.5 kg of methamphetamine, worth Rs 2 crore, in Ramanathapuram, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 12.   The three arrested have been identified as Prabhakaran alias Ashraf (36) of Katpadi in Vellore, Shahinsha (30) of Tondiarpet in Chennai, and Mohammed Zakir alias Ummakka (56) of Ilayangudi in Sivaganga. Preliminary investigation and interrogation of arrested accused reveals that the consignments were being peddled from Myanmar.
