India on August 6, Thursday successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Agni-4 medium-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha. The niche military technology reflected the country’s growing capabilities to seal strategic deterrence and its operational readiness. The test, conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command(SFC), successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the weapon system.
The launch of the cutting-edge ballistic missile was conducted jointly by the Strategic Forces Command and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Ministry of Defence said the successful test demonstrated the missile’s operational readiness and advanced defence technological capabilities. “Medium Range Ballistic Missile Agni-4 was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha on August 6”, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and the Strategic Forces Command for the successful test of Agni 4. He described it as a “textbook mission launch” and said that the successful test reaffirmed India’s commitment to defending the nation with state-of-the-art military technologies.

Agni 4: Indigenous niche military technology to fortify national security
- Agni-4 is a two-stage, surface-to-surface ballistic missile, developed by DRDO
- Agni-4 incorporates several advanced technologies designed to enhance accuracy, reliability and operational performance with reduced radar signatures & difficult detection and improved survivability
- It is road-mobile(capable of mobility on roads, thus facilitating deployment across the country, depending on national security priorities) and nuclear capable
- Designed as a light-weight missile, it can be easily shifted and deployed across the country, depending on geopolitical vulnerabilities
- Powered by solid-fuel rocket motors
- Missile has a range of upto 4,000kms, thus capable of neutralising enemy targets at vast distances
- Capable of striking targets at ranges of around 4,000 kilometres and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg.
- Include a Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System, backed by a redundant Micro Inertial Navigation System
- Has digital control systems and flex-seal thrust-vectoring technology

The latest successful test of Agni-4 surface-to-surface missile, adds further momentum to India’s continued efforts to expand and modernise its strategic and ballistic missile capabilities, embedded with home-grown technologies and defence apparatus. It boosts the strategic deterrence of India in the volatile and unpredictable geopolitical landscape.
With this ambitious goal, earlier this year, India also successfully tested an advanced Agni missile equipped with a Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) system. The technology allows a single missile to carry multiple warheads capable of being directed towards separate targets, thus placing India among a select group of elite countries possessing such advanced capabilities.
