Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has improved slightly in the last 48 hours, but affected people are facing tremendous challenges while trying to return to their homes. The flood water is decreasing, but the mud it carries is creating life-threatening conditions for the affected people in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts of upper Assam. On the other hand, hundreds of villages are still unreachable for relief and rescue as all modes of communications were broken due to the heavy flood.

The death toll has risen to 68 as on July 27 while over 100 people are still missing. Meanwhile, a central Inter-Ministerial 6 members team headed by joint secretary MHA M Ramachandrudu visited the affected Sivasagar and Charaideo districts on 26 and 27th July. The team holds discussions with district administration and assesses the damages and losses caused by the flood.

RSS at the service

Swayamsevaks of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and karyakartas of Seva Bharati have been carrying out rescue and relief operations in the last five days for the families affected by the devastating floods in Upper Assam. Thousands of families in flood-affected Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts have been rendered homeless and are facing acute crisis of food, clean drinking water, safe shelter and urgent medical care.

In such a calamitous time, Swayamsevaks have been continuously serving in the affected areas. Volunteers carried out a massive rescue operation in Kakati village, D-Gaon, No. 2 Konwar village and Chetia Kaivarta village in Betbari area of Sivasagar district and rescued more than 200 people from the clutches of dangerous situations and shifted them to safer places and relief camps. Cooked food, clean drinking water, life-saving medicines, clothes and other essential items are being distributed to the stranded families with the help of small boats in the inundated areas of Sunder Pukhuri, Bamun Pukhuri, Geleki and Rajabari.

On the other hand, the relief operations are also going on in full swing at Elengmara, Katiram chhuk, Kulai chhuk, Naliya chhuk, Shenchoa chhuk and Charigari chhuk of Jorhat district. The main relief materials provided to the flood-affected families are: trifles, blankets and anti-mosquito coils, dry food, biscuits and clean drinking water, soap, fitkiri and necessary medicines.

Apart from providing food and water to the affected people using small boats, the volunteers are also taking the elderly, women, children and sick people to safer places. This humanitarian service campaign of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Seva Bharati reflects the eternal tradition of the Sangh, which RSS calls “Ready for Selfless Service.” Inspired by the noble ideals of “Naar Seva Narayan Seva,” the Swayamsevaks and Karyakartas of Seva Bharati have stood firmly beside the affected people during this terrible natural calamity and given hope, courage and strength.
