Kargil Vijay Diwas in Assam: Governor urged youth to draw inspiration from Armed Forces; Honours the martyrs’ families

Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that the sacrifices of the Kargil heroes continue to inspire generations of Indians to uphold the values of courage, discipline and national service

Guwahati: Northeast along with rest of the country is celebrating the “Kargil Vijay Divas” on July 26, 2026. The Kargil Vijay Diwas programme was organised by the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam at the State War Memorial, Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati. The event commemorated India’s historic victory in the 1999 Kargil War and honoured the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of the nation’s armed forces.

Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, attended the program as the chief guest. Paying floral tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the service of the nation, the Governor said that Kargil Vijay Diwas is a solemn reminder of the indomitable spirit, valour and patriotism displayed by the Indian Armed Forces in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that the sacrifices of the Kargil heroes continue to inspire generations of Indians to uphold the values of courage, discipline and national service. He urged the youth to draw inspiration from the lives of the brave soldiers and contribute towards nation-building with dedication and commitment.

The Governor also interacted with veterans, serving defence personnel and the families of martyrs, expressing the nation’s deep gratitude for their selfless service and sacrifices. He reaffirmed that the country will always remain indebted to its brave soldiers, whose unwavering dedication ensures the safety and security of every citizen.

The Governor felicitated Hony Flg Officer Thogiram Gogoi father and Dulu Prabha Gogoi, mother of Capt Late Jintu Gogoi, VrC who made the supreme sacrifice in Kargil to safeguard our nation from the enemies. The governor also honoured Thageswari Das, mother of Gunner Udhab Das, Bharati Saikia, wife of Nk Late Someswar Saikia, SC, Hiranya Gogoi, mother of Sep Late Rupom Gogoi, SC, Dhal Kumari Shrestha wife of Hav Late Padam Bahadur Shrestha who showed their extreme valours to defend our nation at various times.

The programme was attended by senior officers of the Armed Forces Senior Defence Veterans, civil administration officials, Ex-Servicemen, NCC Cadets, students and members of the public, who joined in paying homage to the heroes of the Kargil War. The Governor also praised the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam for the smooth conduct of the programme and the work being done for the welfare of Ex-servicemen by the Directorate.

The event concluded with patriotic performances and a collective pledge to uphold the ideals of national unity, integrity and service embodied by the brave soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces.
