Tipu Sultan has often been glorified in popular narratives as an invincible warrior, but the history of Keralam tells another story — one in which his forces faced determined resistance and defeat at the hands of the Kingdom of Travancore. ‘Tipu’s Nemesis’ has one such story to tell — a story of courage, resistance, leadership and military brilliance from one of the most significant yet underrepresented chapters in Keralam’s history.

The concept trailer of ‘Tipu’s Nemesis’ -The Battle of Nedumkotta, an AI-assisted historical epic inspired by the battle of Nedumkotta (1789), was officially released on July 15 by J. Nandakumar, national convenor of Prajna Pravah. The ambitious cinematic project seeks to recreate the courage, leadership and military brilliance that enabled the Kingdom of Travancore to resist the advance of one of the most barbaric religious fundamentalist rulers of eighteenth-century India.

The Battle of Nedumkotta stands as one of the defining military engagements in the southern history of Bharat. In the late eighteenth century, the Kingdom of Travancore constructed the Nedumkotta, an extensive defensive fortification stretching from the Arabian Sea near Kodungallur to the foothills of the Western Ghats.

Built using earthen ramparts, deep trenches, bamboo obstacles, bastions and strategically positioned artillery, the defensive line represented one of the most remarkable indigenous military engineering projects of its time.

When Tipu Sultan launched his attack against Travancore in December 1789, his forces encountered determined resistance along this formidable defensive system.

The fighting at the Nedumkotta disrupted the Islamic ruler’s advance and formed part of the wider chain of events that preceded the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790–1792). Since then, the battle has occupied an important place in Keralam’s history as a symbol of determined resistance and military preparedness.

Honouring the heroes of Travancore, ‘Tipu’s Nemesis’ movie pays rich tribute to the remarkable personalities whose leadership and courage shaped this period of history.

The most significant narrative is that of Vaikom Padmanabha Pillai; he is portrayed as the film’s central protagonist and representative of the Travancore commanders who stood in defence of their homeland. Through his character, the film celebrates the courage, discipline, leadership and sacrifice of the soldiers who defended the kingdom during one of the greatest military challenges it faced.

The film also honours Maharaja Dharma Raja (Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma), whose reign was marked by political wisdom, military preparedness and steadfast leadership. His determination to strengthen Travancore’s defences and protect the kingdom’s sovereignty laid the foundation for its successful resistance against external threats.

Another towering figure in the story is Raja Kesavadas, the celebrated Dewan of Travancore, remembered for his exceptional administrative ability, diplomatic foresight and strategic planning. His role in strengthening the kingdom’s infrastructure, economy and military preparedness, including the development and reinforcement of the Nedumkotta, played an important role in Travancore’s defensive strategy.

Beyond these luminaries, the film also honours the thousands of unnamed soldiers, engineers, craftsmen and ordinary people whose collective efforts transformed the Nedumkotta into a powerful symbol of unity, resilience and national defence.

As per reports, one of the defining features of ‘Tipu’s Nemesis’ is its extensive use of artificial intelligence in cinematic production. The concept trailer has been created using a combination of advanced AI-assisted creative tools and traditional filmmaking techniques.

A new possibility for Bharat’s historical films

‘Tipu’s Nemesis’ explores AI emerging filmmaking model by recreating historical architecture, period costumes, military formations, battle sequences and cinematic environments through AI-assisted workflows while remaining rooted in historical research and creative direction.

The project aims to demonstrate that regional history can be presented with cinematic scale and visual richness, encouraging new conversations about the future of historical storytelling in Bharatiya cinema.

Creator Krishnakumar Kaimal said: “The Battle of Nedumkotta deserves far greater recognition than it has received. Through ‘Tipu’s Nemesis’, I wanted to honour the courage, leadership and sacrifice of the defenders of Travancore while exploring how AI can help independent filmmakers bring ambitious historical stories to the screen.

AI has enabled us to visualise battles, fortifications and historical worlds that would otherwise require budgets beyond the reach of independent cinema. My hope is that this project inspires the audience to rediscover this remarkable chapter of Keralam’s history and encourages filmmakers to explore the creative possibilities of AI-assisted historical cinema,” he added.
