West Bengal: Egg attack on TMC leader Ujjal Biswas after locals discover cache of govt relief materials in his house

A major political controversy unfolded in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Tuesday (June 9) when former Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Ujjal Biswas was confronted by an angry crowd at his residence in Krishnagar. The incident occurred after locals discovered a large stockpile of government relief materials, including tarpaulins, sarees, and clothing items, stored on the premises.

The discovery quickly drew residents to Biswas’s residence, where questions were raised about why welfare materials intended for public distribution had remained at a private property rather than being distributed to beneficiaries or stored in official government warehouses.

As the crowd swelled, tensions escalated rapidly, eventually leading to clashes and vandalism.

Eggs thrown at former minister

According to reports, protesters breached security arrangements and entered the premises of the former minister’s residence. What began as a demonstration soon turned confrontational as angry residents entered Biswas’s office chamber and demanded explanations regarding the stockpiled materials.

During the chaos, Biswas was reportedly shoved and pelted with eggs by members of the crowd. Parts of the residence and office premises were also damaged as protesters vented their anger.

Videos and images from the incident circulated widely on social media, showing the tense atmosphere around the residence and the large police deployment that followed.

Allegations of relief material hoarding since 2017

The controversy intensified after BJP leaders accused the former minister of storing government-supplied relief materials for several years.

According to BJP leaders, the stockpile included tarpaulins, sarees, rags, and other welfare-related items that were allegedly meant for distribution among disaster-affected and economically weaker sections of society. They claimed that some of the materials had been lying at the premises since 2017.

The protestors questioned why government relief stock was kept at a private residence rather than in official storage facilities.

The allegations quickly became a major political issue in Nadia district, with many accusing the Trinamool Congress of failing to ensure transparency in relief distribution.

Ujjal Biswas rejects allegations

Former minister Ujjal Biswas denied the allegations and defended himself against accusations of hoarding government supplies.

According to Biswas, the materials had only recently arrived at his premises and were not being stored there for years as alleged by political opponents.

He further stated that he had informed the local Block Development Officer (BDO) about the materials and had initiated steps to return them to official government custody.

Discovery of saree bundles fuels fresh accusations

The situation reportedly worsened when protesters found bundles of white sarees inside the premises.

The discovery reignited allegations regarding the possible political use of welfare resources. Many  questioned the purpose for which the sarees were being stored and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

The presence of these materials further inflamed public sentiment and intensified the confrontation between protesters and supporters of the former minister.

Amid the unrest, reports emerged that a woman who attempted to shield Ujjal Biswas from the agitated crowd was allegedly manhandled.

At least three other individuals who tried to intervene during the confrontation were also reportedly attacked as the situation spiralled out of control.

The incidents have raised concerns regarding public safety and the breakdown of order during the protest.

Police and forces rescue former minister

Local police personnel initially struggled to bring the situation under control as the crowd continued to gather outside the residence.

The situation was eventually brought under control after senior police officer Shilpi Paul arrived at the scene along with central forces. Security personnel escorted Biswas away from the residence and moved him to the local police station to ensure his safety.

A significant police presence remained in the area to prevent further disturbances and maintain law and order.
