It must be said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), along with some of its new auxiliary platforms, such as groups emerging with youth-centric branding like the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP), appears to be appropriating the entirety of Congress’s hard work and claiming it as their own.
Congress’s Core Grievance: Credit Snatching or Strategic Blunder?
In the words of Congress leaders, “We feel that it is solely due to the resistance offered at the grassroots level and the efforts of activists willing to take risks, that these issues have entered the public consciousness. Yet, the reality reflected in the media appears to be quite different.” For instance, during the allegations surrounding the NEET paper leak, the sit-ins and protests organized across college campuses by medical students and their families may have been visible in local reports and videos; however, the moment these events translate into TV talk shows, news headlines and social media trends, it is AAP and CJP that are credited with spearheading this “new mass movement.”
Viewed in this light, this situation has become a festering wound for the Congress. Someone else is reaping the benefits of all of Congress’s hard work. Given AAP’s dominance in Delhi and Congress’s own precarious state, the party was already enduring a difficult phase in the national capital; it now appears that whatever little ground remained has been completely eroded by AAP and the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP). If this trend continues, it will not be long before whatever meager identity and influence Congress still retains is completely wiped out!
CJP: The New Branding Rollout
In a sense, the sight of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) serves to refresh memories of the old Anna Movement; to some extent, it appears to be the current iteration of AAP’s highly effective media strategy. They (AAP) had originally appeared before the public wielding a broom, a symbolic gesture intended to assure the masses that they would sweep corruption out of the country. It is, of course, a different matter entirely that the very individuals who founded the party, Arvind Kejriwal and his associates, are themselves currently embroiled in allegations of corruption.
Given this context, it appears evident that the CJP is merely a new, disguised avatar of the AAP, designed with the sole objective of securing political mileage for the parent party. Consequently, from its very nomenclature to its style of communication, the group is actively evoking memories of the Anna Movement; a movement that, originally staged in Delhi and spearheaded by the youth, stood against the ruling establishment, albeit one that was allegedly propped up by foreign funding.
Currently, the CJP is operating at full throttle in the role of a ‘narrator,’ with the explicit goal of ousting the BJP government from power. Its promises mirror, almost exactly, those once made by the Aam Aadmi Party. Through short skits, satirical pieces and a playful persona disseminated across social media platforms, they are effectively packaging even falsehoods as truth and delivering them to the public. As a result, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), leveraging the CJP as its conduit, is currently managing to appropriate the credit on social media for the various protests and press conferences being organized by the Congress party.
The Ethical and Democratic Landscape: Who Deserves the Narrative?
In the realm of political culture, a pertinent question arises; who truly deserves to own the narrative? Is it those who struggle on the ground, or those who are simply better at pitching their message? In a democracy, the visibility of one’s voice constitutes a form of power; whoever utilizes it most effectively becomes the dominant voice in the discourse. To be honest, the Congress party’s resentment is understandable, for it remains, even today, the largest opposition party in the country. Yet, the reality is that modern political warfare revolves around a digital axis. To reap the political dividends of one’s hard work, both the streets and the screen have become indispensable. The AAP and the CJP have mastered the art of generating massive impact through fleeting, emotionally charged content and indeed, the art of transforming falsehoods into perceived truths! It is not merely a tool for propaganda; it actively shapes people’s beliefs, identities and collective political memory. Numerous proxy wars are currently being waged to destabilize India, manifesting in countless forms ranging from language, caste and religion to various sects and creeds. These conflicts were active even when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not in power. They persist today, even as the BJP takes deliberate, measured steps, one after another- to strengthen India, advancing its agenda with unwavering resolve. The crux of the matter, however, is this; the parties currently out of power, be it the Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party, are both desperately scrambling to seize control. Yet, attaining power is only possible if the incumbent regime is perceived as weak.

Several statistics lie before us; one such figure reveals that the party has managed to garner followers primarily from Pakistan (49%), Bangladesh (14%), and the USA (14%), while attracting only 9% from India. Yet, the entire clamor revolves around an anti-establishment narrative, within which this new party claims to be at the very forefront of social media engagement. In this context, the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) has now even held its first official press conference in Delhi, attended by its three spokespersons: Sourav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Vijeta Dahiya.
It is common knowledge that the movement’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, served as the social media strategist for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from 2020 to 2022. He subsequently moved to the United States, from where he has continued to target political issues in India and critique the Modi government.
Having emerged through the medium of social media, the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ is now poised to engage in street-level politics. To what extent this movement is merely a “toolkit” orchestrated from abroad is a reality that will undoubtedly be revealed to the nation in the days to come. However, one thing is clear today: just as the Aam Aadmi Party and its emergent leader, Arvind Kejriwal, once launched their political journey by placing Anna Hazare at the forefront, they ultimately proved to be the biggest headache for the Congress party itself.
In a sense, a similar scenario has once again unfolded before the nation today. While it is the Congress, acting as the opposition, that is raising key issues, the social media-fueled Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is successfully managing to reap the entire benefit of these efforts. Given this situation, there is a risk that the Congress might once again find itself completely relegated to the sidelines! After all, in the realm of politics, multiple narratives often unfold simultaneously. Now, it remains to be seen what scenes the passage of time will reveal to us.
