Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam Chief Minister VD Satheeshan has landed at the centre of a political and religious controversy after allegations surfaced that temple protocols were violated during his recent visits to the famed Sree Guruvayoor Temple and Triprayar Sree Rama Temple. The issue has triggered sharp criticism from opposition leaders and sections of devotees, who accused the administration of granting VIP privileges that allegedly disrupted regular darshan arrangements and violated long-standing temple traditions. The controversy intensified further after photographs and videos from inside temple premises surfaced online, despite existing restrictions and previous court observations regarding photography and filming within temple complexes. Senior BJP leader Adv. B. Gopalakrishnan has now formally approached the Guruvayoor Devaswom administration seeking action, warning that the matter could soon reach the Keralam High Court if no corrective steps are taken.
The controversy began after Chief Minister Satheeshan visited the Sree Guruvayoor Temple on May 24 while attending the wedding ceremony of the son of one of his ministerial colleagues. According to critics, the visit took place on a May 24 despite existing temple protocols that do not ordinarily permit VIP darshan on Sundays and major holidays due to the exceptionally heavy rush of devotees. Thousands of pilgrims, many of whom had reportedly queued outside the temple from late Saturday night, allegedly faced delays and restrictions during the Chief Minister’s visit.
Devotees and opposition leaders claimed that additional security arrangements linked to the presence of the Chief Minister, ministers, MLAs and MPs created congestion inside and around the temple premises. Critics argued that Guruvayoor Temple already has an established and highly structured security and crowd-management mechanism, making the additional movement restrictions unnecessary and burdensome for ordinary worshippers.
The issue further escalated after photographs and video clips allegedly showing the Chief Minister and Congress MP Hibi Eden inside the temple premises surfaced on social media platforms. The visuals drew attention because the Keralam High Court, in a 2024 ruling, had reiterated restrictions on photography and videography within temple premises in order to preserve sanctity and avoid disruption to worship practices.
Hibi Eden and his wife later shared images linked to their temple visit on social media, leading to accusations that temple protocols had been selectively ignored for political personalities. Critics pointed out that ordinary devotees are routinely prevented from using cameras and mobile phones inside temple premises, while political leaders appeared to have received exceptional treatment.
Senior BJP leader Adv. B. Gopalakrishnan submitted a formal complaint before the Guruvayoor Devaswom Administrator alleging serious violations of temple customs, security norms and court directions. He stated that if the temple administration failed to respond appropriately, the matter would be taken before the Keralam High Court for judicial intervention.
The controversy did not remain confined to Guruvayoor. Similar allegations surfaced regarding the Chief Minister’s subsequent visit to the Triprayar Sree Rama Temple in Thrissur district. According to reports, Congress workers allegedly gathered near the temple carrying party flags and raising slogans while the Chief Minister was inside the temple premises. Videos and photographs from the visit were again circulated publicly, triggering further accusations of protocol violations.
Several devotees reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over delays in darshan and crowd management issues during the visit. Critics alleged that political activity in and around temple premises compromised the spiritual atmosphere and violated traditional norms expected to be maintained at major temples.
The controversy has also reignited broader political debates in Keralam over VIP culture in temples and the relationship between political power and religious institutions. Opposition leaders argued that despite earlier public statements promising minimal disruption to citizens and reduced security movement, the Chief Minister’s temple visits reflected continuity with earlier practices criticised during previous administrations.
Political observers note that temple administration and protocol-related controversies frequently become emotionally charged issues in Keralam, where major temples attract lakhs of devotees and hold significant cultural influence. Questions surrounding equal access, crowd management and political privilege often become flashpoints for larger ideological and political confrontations.
