New Delhi: India is set to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 14 and 15 under its 2026 chairship of the expanded bloc, at a time of intensifying geopolitical tensions in West Asia and mounting demands for reforms in global governance institutions. The high-level gathering, to be chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, is expected to bring together foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS member and partner countries.
The meeting will mark the first major ministerial-level engagement under India’s current BRICS chairship and is expected to play a key role in shaping the agenda for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled later this year. Delegates attending the summit are also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay in the national capital.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the participation of senior diplomats and outlined the broad agenda of the summit.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions during the two-day meeting will focus on major regional and global developments, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and reforming global governance institutions in response to shifting geopolitical realities. “The meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers is scheduled for the 14th and 15th May, and we are presiding over it,” Jaiswal said during the briefing. He added that participating countries would determine their respective representation and further details would be shared as foreign delegations arrive in New Delhi.
Focus on governance reform and global South
India recently unveiled the official logo and website for its BRICS 2026 chairship under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The theme reflects India’s “Humanity First” and people-centric approach that was championed by Prime Minister Modi during the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
This will be the fourth time India hosts a BRICS summit-level engagement, underlining New Delhi’s expanding influence within the grouping and its growing leadership role among Global South nations. The meeting is expected to place considerable emphasis on strengthening multilateral institutions and reshaping global governance frameworks amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty and economic realignment across regions.
Preparations for the summit are currently underway in the national capital, with several foreign ministers and senior delegations already arriving in New Delhi. The official sessions are scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam. According to the MEA schedule, the first ministerial session will begin at 10:30 am on Thursday, followed by a joint call on Prime Minister Modi at Seva Teerth. Additional ministerial discussions and bilateral meetings are planned over the course of the summit, including a formal dinner to be hosted by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.
The BRICS meeting comes at a critical juncture as conflicts and diplomatic tensions continue to escalate across West Asia, adding urgency to discussions on global stability, multilateral coordination and institutional reform.
