Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram

Madhyamgram (North 24 Parganas): In a shocking incident that has heightened political tensions in West Bengal, Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram late on Wednesday (May 6) on the road.

According to initial reports, Rath was seated inside his black Scorpio vehicle with the West Bengal Assembly sticker and was interacting with locals when motorcycle-borne assailants approached and opened fire at point-blank range. Eyewitness accounts and sources indicate that at least four rounds were fired, with three bullets hitting Rath.

Some accounts suggest that the attackers had been trailing Rath’s vehicle and struck when it slowed down, ensuring a close-range attack before fleeing the spot. He was immediately rushed to a nearby nursing home (Diversity Nursing Home), but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The attack also left another individual injured, who has been admitted to a private hospital (Apollo Hospital) for treatment.

Police from the Madhyamgram police station reached the spot soon after the incident and have launched an investigation. Rath’s body has been kept at a local hospital as legal formalities continue.

Sources indicate that Suvendu Adhikari is on his way to the site, while senior officials, including CRPF Director General GP Singh, are also expected to arrive.

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the identity of the attackers or the motive behind the killing. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information as the investigation Progresses
