Thrissur: At least 13 people are killed in the explosion at a fireworks unit at Mundathikkode, near Thrissur. The firework materials were prepared for Tiruvambady temple wing for Thrissur Pooram due on April 26. Unconfirmed reports suggest that about 40 people may have been inside the unit. This calculation is based on the food sent to the site for the workers. The District Collector has ordered for a Magisterial enquiry. Thrissur Revenue Divisional Officer (DMO) who is also the Sub Divisional Magistrate will be in-charge of the enquiry. The enquiry officer has been asked to find out the reason for the mishap and the consequences.
Twenty-three injured victims have been admitted in Medical College Hospital, Thrissur. District Collector Shikha Surendran told the media that about 30 to 40 people were there during the mishap. Some of them might have moved out from the site for drinking water or so. The reason for explosion is still not known. Mudathikkod Satheesh, the licensee of the site is among the people injured and hospitalized, the District Collector said. Relief and rescue activities are being carried out on a war footing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and declared urgent financial aid. Rs 2 lakhs for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each is sanctioned for the injured.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan instructed the Chief Secretary to gear up the government machineries to facilitate all possible medical aids for the victims. CM said, if necessary, expert doctors from outside the state would be deployed. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
Thousands of kilograms of firework materials and chemicals had been stored there. Preparation of the final products are almost over. The loud sound was heard even kilometers away. Several houses were damaged. Bodies of 7 men and parts of bodies of 5 have been recovered. Several women are also injured.
There is unconfirmed news that potassium perchlorate had been used for the preparation of the fireworks which is less expensive and producing loud sound. It was reported that the same chemical was the villain in the Puttingal fireworks mishap in Kollam district of 2016 which resulted in the death of 111 victims and 350 to 400 were left injured.
