Tamil Nadu sees surge in crimes against women ahead of poll schedule announcement; BJP slams DMK for inaction

A series of sexual assault incidents across Tamil Nadu, including the arrest of a senior police official, has intensified political attacks on the DMK government, with opposition leaders alleging deteriorating law and order and police inaction.

Hours before the Election Commission of India announced the poll schedule for five states that are going to polls in April next, in Tamil Nadu there is no respite from crime against women and children, with sexual predators roaming unfettered during the DMK regime. The opposition accuses the police of lethargic handling of such sensitive cases, alleging that their hands are tied by DMK masters.

Tamil Nadu has been in the news for back-to-back sexual assaults involving school girls, college girls, single women, and others in the last four days, making headlines in upcountry media. Without the buzz losing its decibel, in Coimbatore, a police official was held for sexual harassment of women constables reporting to him. It is a typical case where a senior police official, T Senthil Kumar (54), Commandant of the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) IV Battalion at Kovaipudhur in Coimbatore, was arrested on March 14 on sexual harassment charges. Senior officials had received a large number of complaints against him in December 25 and January this year. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) that probed the same found the charges to be true and recommended his suspension. He was subsequently placed under suspension from service on February 12. Following this, a woman police constable lodged a complaint against Senthil Kumar for sexual harassment at the All Women Police Station, Coimbatore South, on March 12. Based on that, he was arrested after a case was filed against him.

On the night of March 15, when an elderly woman (66) from a village near Gorimedu in Salem stepped out of her house to have tea, two intoxicated youths allegedly approached her, threatened her with a knife, and attempted to sexually assault her. When she screamed for help, nearby residents rushed to the spot. On seeing the crowd, the two accused fled the scene. Police later registered a case and launched a search operation. A 26-year-old man identified as Ravikumar has since been arrested in connection with the attempted assault. Authorities said the accused was allegedly under the influence of ganja/cannabis at the time of the incident. The victim, who sustained injuries during the attack, is currently undergoing treatment at the Salem Government Hospital.

In another case, a government doctor, Om Prakash, was arrested for promising to help a medical student from Ooty pass the examination, confining her in a hotel room, and sexually assaulting her.

In another incident, a youth was thrashed by the public after he allegedly attempted to misbehave with a woman under the guise of offering her help on his bike in Kalasapakkam, Tiruvannamalai district. He was later handed over to the police.

In the past, in most sexual assault, drug smuggling, and land-grabbing cases, the accused were allegedly from the DMK or its allies like VCK. They exploit their proximity to those in political power to indulge in various crimes while the police remain silent spectators. Most surprisingly, they were rewarded with party positions. A DMK official who has been accused by 38 women, with official complaints given to the police, has been promoted within the party.

BJP Mahila Wing chief and Tamil Nadu MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, in a post on X, condemned the attack, saying women and children are unsafe in the state. “On hearing this incident, my body is shivering. During the five years of DMK, drug consumption has touched an alarming proportion. This is an example of its bad impact on society. During the last one week, it has been the same news of women or children being sexually assaulted or harassed. CM Stalin thundered that he would curb crime against women with an iron fist, which is only rhetoric.”

Taking to social media, one netizen said: “SHOCKING BREAKING: Tamil Nadu drowning in GANJA TSUNAMI under MK Stalin’s useless rule! Drugged-up lunatics waving sickles inside a government maternity ward in Kattumannarkoil hospital — threatening screaming mothers and terrified doctors! Stalin thundered from the stage: ‘I will make Tamil Nadu drug-free!’ Reality? Ganja cheaper than tea at roadside stalls! Addicts rampaging through schools, hospitals, and offices — attacking innocent people daily! Law and order? Completely dead under DMK!”

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran told media persons: “Be it a 2-year-old child or a 60-year-old grandmother, no one is safe in the DMK government. No safety. No control over drugs. No monthly EB calculation.”

BJP leader K Annamalai, in a post on X, said: “During the DMK’s five-year rule, there were 8,008 murders, 2,080 sexual assaults, and 39,999 cases of crimes against children under POCSO registered. The Tamil Nadu government, which conducted post-mortems on 41 bodies in the Karur stampede, could not find the culprit in the Vilathikulam schoolgirl rape and murder case. The CM remains oblivious to all this but is busy sharing reels daily.”

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a status report regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition seeking a CBI investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 17-year-old Class 12 student in Vilathikulam, Thoothukudi district.
