Telangana: Congress cancels transfer of Sharada Peetham land in Hyderabad to Jal Mandali after pressure from BJP

The Congress government in Telangana, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has withdrawn and cancelled its proposal, on February 28, to allocate land belonging to Sharada Peetham in Kokapet to the Jal Mandali after objections were raised by BJP and BRS leaders, and echoed by Hindu organisations.

The controversy emerged after government authorities initiated steps to allocate portions of land belonging to Sharada Peetham, located in Kokapet, a rapidly developing real estate zone in Hyderabad, to the State Water Board, with reports indicating that officials had attempted to proceed with the demolition of the Peetham building while moving ahead with the proposed allocation in the morning hours of February 28.

This prompted political intervention, with politicians reaching the venue on 28 February, including leaders from BJP Telangana and BRS questioning the move. As the matter escalated, the issue soon drew responses from Hindu organisations as well, who expressed concern over the developments at the site and its safety under Congress government.

Later in the day, the CM Revanth Reddy reviewed its position and decided that the lands should continue with Sharada Peetham as they were. Subsequently, he directed officials to cancel the proposed allocation to Jal Mandali and retain the land with Sharada Peetham.

Earlier on the day, BJP Telangana President Ramachandra Rao visited Sharada Peetham along with BJP and RSS workers, stating that certain actions around such a respected Hindu religious institution had led to unnecessary anxiety, which he described as unfortunate, while emphasising that no disturbance or tension should occur at the sacred place and that all stakeholders must work to protect the dignity and sanctity of religious institutions.

The BJP President welcomed the withdrawal of the earlier decision to demolish the structure and allocate the land, noting that matters relating to spiritual places must always be handled with sensitivity, respect and responsibility as they impact the sentiments of large sections of devotees.
