Baruipur: An alleged assault involving a mother and daughter at a local vegetable shop in Baruipur East, South 24-Parganas district of West Bengal has sparked sharp political reactions, with calls for swift action and a fair investigation. The incident, which reportedly followed a dispute at the shop, is currently under police examination in India.

BJP IT Cell Chief and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led government following the allegations. He shared a video clip on his X handle in which the women narrated their version of events and described the episode as “disturbing.” According to his post, a Hindu woman wearing a tilak and her daughter had gone to buy vegetables but were allegedly refused service. When the woman protested, she was reportedly abused and slapped by the shopkeeper’s son.

Calling the incident “deeply shameful and unacceptable,” Malviya said no one should face discrimination, abuse, or violence because of their faith or appearance. He added that West Bengal has historically stood for coexistence and mutual respect and warned that such incidents damage the state’s social harmony. He urged authorities to act swiftly, conduct a thorough investigation and ensure strict action against those responsible, stating that law and order must prevail and every citizen should feel safe and treated equally. He also asserted that discrimination and violence in any form cannot be tolerated and criticised the broader law-and-order situation under the state’s ruling All India Trinamool Congress government.

In the video shared online, the complainants were identified as Namita Biswas and Pallabi Biswas. They alleged that they were assaulted after visiting the shop to purchase goods and later lodged a complaint with local police against the shopkeeper and his son.

Police sources confirmed that a complaint had been received and that the matter is under examination. Officials said no arrests had been reported at the time of filing this report and urged restraint while the investigation continues.
