US: Las Vegas home under investigation after discovery of refrigerators containing COVID-19 & other biological samples

Authorities are investigating a suspected biolaboratory discovered in a Las Vegas home, which appears to be connected to the owner of an unauthorised California biolab arrested in 2023.

SWAT raid uncovers possible biological materials

SWAT officers executed a search warrant on February 1 after receiving a tip about the lab in a residence on the city’s east side, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. One person, the property manager, was taken into custody, though officials provided no immediate details on potential charges.

Investigators reportedly found evidence of possible biological material, including refrigerators containing vials of unknown liquids. Authorities emphasised that there is no threat to the public.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the Las Vegas home is owned by Jia Bei Zhu, who was arrested in 2023 for operating a biolab in Reedley, California, without the proper permits to manufacture COVID-19, pregnancy, and HIV tests, and for mislabeling some of the kits. Zhu is scheduled to stand trial in that case in April.

McMahill said law enforcement took special precautions during the search warrant execution, including using a robot to clear the home and collecting multiple air samples. Hazmat teams were also brought in to remove items from the property.

FBI collects 1,000 biological samples for analysis

In a February 3 interview, FBI Director Kash Patel said that 1,000 samples from the Las Vegas home have been sent to the agency for analysis.

“The FBI is collecting that evidence and taking it to our lab for further examination,” Patel said. “Once the results are in, we can consider pursuing additional charges.”
