Kolkata: On February 2, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a video alleging the illegal filling of a public water body by TMC-backed land mafias in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

Accompanying the video, he stated, “What is unfolding in Bhangar right now is nothing short of a criminal conspiracy against the people and the environment, with the TMC government acting as the biggest facilitator.”

Adhikari added that the pond in question belongs to the West Bengal government. “Under the cover of night, TMC-supported land mafias are filling up a large public pond at the entrance of Bijoyganj Bazar in Bhangar. This is not an ordinary water body; it is situated on land officially owned by the Hospital and Health Department,” he said.

“Yet, dumpers loaded with soil and JCB machines are operating with complete impunity, destroying a crucial water resource while an absent administration looks the other way,” he added.

The BJP leader cautioned that this could trigger a man-made disaster similar to the one witnessed in Anandpur a few days ago.

“Here as well, foundations are being laid for unauthorized constructions and unregulated activities, with no oversight from government departments. This is not governance—it is Mafia Raj. It represents the systematic destruction of water bodies, the environment, and public safety for personal gain and political patronage,” Adhikari concluded.
