The Jubilee Hills police have issued a second notice to K. Chandrashekhar Rao, MLA from Gajwel and former Chief Minister of Telangana, in connection with the ongoing phone-tapping investigation being probed under Crime No.243/2024 of Panjagutta Police Station.
First notice to KCR
On January 29, 2026, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Jubilee Hills Division, Hyderabad issued a notice to KCR, asking him to appear for examination on January 30, 2026. Citing his age (above 65 years), the notice clarified that he was not required to attend the police station compulsorily and could be examined either at his Hyderabad residence or any other location within Hyderabad city convenient to him.
Representation and second notice
KCR responded by seeking examination at his present place of stay in Yerravelli village, Markook mandal, Siddipet district. After considering the request, the investigating agency issued a second notice dated January 30, 2026, declining to shift the venue outside Hyderabad.
The police stated that, as per official records, including election affidavits and State Legislative Assembly documents, KCR’s ordinary place of residence is in Hyderabad. They also cited administrative difficulty in transporting sensitive electronic and physical records required for examination to a village location.
Present status
The second notice directs KCR to make himself available for examination at his Hyderabad residence on February 1, 2026, at 3.00 pm without fail. Investigators have reiterated that the probe is ongoing and that further steps will be taken based on the outcome of examinations and analysis of evidence already collected.
Case Background
The case was registered on March 10, 2024, following complaints alleging illegal phone surveillance during the previous BRS government. The investigation relates to alleged unauthorised interception of phone calls of politicians, journalists and other individuals, purportedly through misuse of police intelligence infrastructure. Several sections of the IPC and the Information Technology Act have been invoked.
During 2024–25, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) questioned multiple senior police officials and political figures. Former ministers, including K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao, were examined as part of the probe, and digital as well as physical records were seized for forensic analysis.
