Muzaffarnagar: In a case highlighting the growing scrutiny of social media content, Ahmad Ali, 21, a resident of Saidpur Khurd village in Muzaffarnagar district, has been arrested after a video in which he allegedly made objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath went viral online.

According to the Muzaffarnagar police, the video circulated widely across various social media platforms, drawing significant public attention and prompting immediate law enforcement action. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar confirmed that Ahmad was taken into custody shortly after a case was registered. “The accused was booked under Sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code,” SSP Kumar told reporters. “The video contained statements that were objectionable towards the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, which necessitated police intervention to maintain public order.” The case comes amid increasing vigilance by law enforcement agencies in India over online content, particularly posts deemed offensive toward political leaders.
Sections Invoked
Section 352 of the Indian Penal Code, under which Ahmad has been charged, addresses intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, while Section 353 pertains to statements conducive to public mischief. Both sections have been applied in cases where individuals’ actions or statements were seen as likely to disturb social harmony or provoke adverse reactions among the public.
“Our priority is to ensure that the law is applied appropriately while safeguarding the rights of all citizens,” SSP Kumar said. Authorities are also monitoring online platforms for similar content and have called on social media users to exercise caution when posting or sharing, emphasising that viral content can have real-world legal implications.
