Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reached out to young citizens and first-time electors across the country on the occasion of National Voters’ Day, emphasising that enrolling as a voter marks a defining moment in an individual’s democratic journey.
In a letter addressed to MY-Bharat volunteers and youngsters, the Prime Minister described the act of becoming a voter as an “occasion for celebration” and urged society to rejoice whenever a citizen registers to vote for the first time.
Highlighting the constitutional significance of voting, Modi described the right to vote as both a sacred privilege and a solemn responsibility. He said that participation in elections reflects an individual’s commitment to the nation’s future and the democratic ethos of Bharat.
“Voting is a sacred constitutional right and a mark of participation in Bharat’s future. The voter is the Bhagya Vidhata of our development journey,” the Prime Minister wrote, underscoring the power vested in every citizen in a democracy.
He further described the indelible ink applied during voting as a “badge of honour” that symbolises the vibrancy and continuity of India’s democratic process.
Sharing excerpts from the letter on social media platform X, Modi reiterated his message, stating that the moment someone becomes a voter should be celebrated collectively.
“Becoming a voter is an occasion of celebration! Today, on National Voters’ Day, I penned a letter to MY-Bharat volunteers on how we all must rejoice when someone around us has enrolled as a voter,” he wrote while posting the letter.
In his message, the Prime Minister placed special emphasis on first-time voters, describing them as individuals who hold the power to influence the destiny of the nation.
“Many youngsters among your friends or relatives may be first-time voters. This is a moment of great significance for them. Our first-time voters should be welcomed into democracy as individuals who have the power to transform the destiny of our country,” he said.
Modi encouraged citizens to actively acknowledge and celebrate this transition into civic responsibility, calling it an important step toward strengthening democratic participation.
The Prime Minister also called upon educational institutions to play a proactive role in recognising this important civic milestone. He suggested that schools, colleges, and universities should honour students as they become eligible voters, ensuring the moment is marked with dignity and awareness.
According to Modi, such recognition would deepen students’ understanding of democratic values and foster a sense of responsibility toward the nation.
In his letter, Modi laid special emphasis on the role of women voters in strengthening India’s democracy. He said that the participation of women, particularly young women, is crucial for building an inclusive and representative democratic system.
“I want to emphasise that the participation of our Nari Shakti, especially young women, is crucial for an inclusive democracy. Their awareness and active involvement have strengthened the foundations of Bharat,” he added.
The Prime Minister’s message on National Voters’ Day serves as a renewed call for greater civic engagement, especially among the youth, reaffirming that the strength of Indian democracy lies in informed, aware, and active participation by its citizens.
