RAIPUR: In a tragic development, a former village head was shot dead by armed Maoists in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, suggests reports floating in media.
The incident reportedly unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Kawargatta village under the jurisdiction of Pamed police station, leaving the locals in a state of panic.
According to details, the deceased Bheema Madkam had gone towards his fields when a group of armed Maoists suddenly appeared on the scene and fired shots on the former, resulting in his immediate demise. The Naxalites immediately fled the scene after the incident.
The deceased in the past had reportedly survived a similar attack by Maoists and has recently returned to his village from Dantewada. The murder of a former village head in broad day light has sent shockwaves in the region, raising concern over civilian safety. The police on the other hand has initiated an investigation into the case.
Security forces recover weapons from Maoist’s hideout in Gariyaband
In a separate development, a team of security personnel on Tuesday recovered weapons from a Maoist’s hideout in Gariyaband district. The recovery was made during an operation launched by a team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) in the forest area of Daudpandaripani.
The recovery included an AK-47 rifle and a 12-bore gun, which were buried underground in the said area. The operation was carried out on the basis of the inputs provided by surrendered Naxalites. Notably, 9 Maoists including two divisional committee members had surrendered before officials with weapons in Garaiyaband district on January 19.
Police and security forces have intensified operations against remaining Maoist cadres in Bastar and other Maoist-affected regions ahead of the Union’s deadline to eradicate Maoist-insurgency.
As per reports, only a handful of Maoist’s commanders are left active in the state’s Bastar region, the strongest bastion of Maoists since decades. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced to end armed Maoist-insurgency from the country by March 2026.
