RAIPUR: A controversy erupted in Dharampur village of Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh, after villagers, along with local Hindu workers, protested against alleged conversion activities in a private premise.

The dispute arose on Tuesday, January 6, after villagers and Hindu activists received information about suspicious activities in a residential complex located at the outskirts of the village.

As per media reports, the premise belongs to David Chako, who earlier informed the village head of erecting a residential structure on the spot. The workers, however, are alleging that the premise is now being used as an impermanent church, and 10-12 minors from separate tribal areas are being kept there.

The activists, along with locals, staged a strong protest, raising slogans against alleged conversion activities in the premises on Tuesday, prompting police officials to arrive and intervene.

The workers later also submitted a memorandum to the police, demanding strict action against those involved in carrying out illegal conversion activities. They stressed that such activities led by missionaries will not be allowed in the state at any cost.

Authorities have now initiated a probe into the matter, and the case is being investigated further with the help of a child welfare officer. Documents related to minors residing in the complex are also being verified by the police.

Cases of conversion are keeping surfacing from separate parts of the state, often leading to altercation between locals and people involved in promoting conversion-related activities. Such altercations have also led to violent clashes on occasion, creating law-and-order issues.

The government, on the other hand, have announced about introducing a stringent anti-conversion law to deal with the illegal conversion issue, which, according to the activists, poses a serious threat to social harmony, more particularly in the state’s tribal populated areas. According to the government, the proposed legislation will include stringent provisions to ensure effective control over illegal conversion-related activities.
