Kalana: The village of Kalana in Sanand, Gujarat, is currently a site of intense communal friction following a series of alarming reports involving the targeted harassment of Hindu residents by local Islamists. A video circulating online has brought these grievances to the forefront, featuring a Hindu woman who tearfully details a pattern of systemic abuse and indecency that has shattered the community’s sense of safety.

The testimonies emerging from Kalana describe a harrowing environment for Hindu women. According to the reports, Islamist youths have been accused of unzipping their pants and exposing themselves to women in public spaces. These acts of obscenity are reportedly used as tools of intimidation. The harassment extends to the private sphere; residents claim that when women go to their rooftops for daily chores, Islamist boys on adjacent roofs perform lewd acts and strip off their clothes to humiliate them. When families attempt to oppose this behaviour, they are reportedly met with physical assaults and stone-pelting from the rooftops, a tactic often associated with organised local unrest.

“Bangladesh trigger” and communal threats

The tension in Sanand has been further exacerbated by international events. Following the brutal murder of a Hindu youth named Deepu Das in Bangladesh in late 2024, it is alleged that Islamists in Kalana launched a local offensive. Reports suggest that during these clashes, threats were made to “wipe out” the local Hindu population, specifically targeting the Thakur community, with provocations claiming that what started in Bangladesh would be finished in Gujarat. This connection indicates that global Islamist violence is being used as a rhetorical and psychological weapon to terrorise Hindu minorities in local pockets of Gujarat.

Gujarat’s citizens are increasingly voicing a set of demands that reflect deep concern over safety and public order, while also raising important questions about legality and due process. Many residents are calling for strict action against individuals accused of violence, including proposals for property-related penalties in cases where rooftops were allegedly used for stone-pelting, though legal experts emphasize that any such action must follow court orders and existing law. There is also a strong demand for swift arrests and transparent investigations in cases involving sexual harassment and public indecency, with the primary aim of restoring women’s dignity and public confidence in the justice system. Alongside this, citizens are urging the government to ensure a sustained and visible police presence in sensitive areas to deter crime, prevent escalation, and reassure all communities.
