New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, December 30 graced the Antarrajyiy (inter-state) Jansanskritik Samaroh- Kartik Jatra at Gumla district of Jharkhand.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the rivers, mountains, plateaus and forest of this region which connects Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha have been the nurturers and witnesses of the country’s ancient traditions.
She said that Jharkhand is the birthplace and workplace of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and visiting the state is like a pilgrimage for her, adding that Bhagwan Birsa Munda is revered by all as a great symbol of social justice and tribal pride.
Speaking about Baba Kartik Oraon, the President said Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon strengthened tribal consciousness and identity in accordance with the ideals of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
“Baba Kartik Oraon Ji dedicated his life to the development of tribal community and nation. He worked for the spread of education and the strengthening of social unity. We should resolve to work for the overall development of the society and country by following his ideals,” said President Murmu.
Remembering freedom fighter Tana Bhagat and Param Vir Chakra recipient Elbert Ekka, the President noted that there is a long list of great tribal heroes from the region and the government is making efforts to familiarise the people of Bharat with the heroic tales of these tribal greats by establishing tribal museums.
The President added that it is the responsibility of every individual and institution associated with the tribal heritage to ensure that the contribution made by the tribal heroes are made known to the youth and future generations of the country.
President Murmu stressed that it is crucial to connect youth and future generations to tribal traditions noting that while the youth must move rapidly on the path of modern development, they should also preserve their tribal heritage and identity.

She highlighted that many Eklavya Residential Schools have been established in the country where children from tribal communities are getting education. She added that all those students will made their contribution to their families, tribal community and the nation.
She noted that the Union Government is running schemes like Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan and PM-JANMAN for development and welfare of the tribal communities. The President also mentioned about celebrating the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda on November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.
She further added that 41 departments and ministries are carrying out development and welfare work for the Janjatiya communities under the Tribal sub-plan. President Murmu on the occasion was joined by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Jharkhand’s Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chhattisgarh’s Governor Raman Deka.
