The week from December 22 to December 28, 2025, witnessed a spate of incidents highlighting rising communal tensions, religious coercion, and targeted attacks against Hindus across India and in Bangladesh. Cases ranged from “love jihad” and forced religious conversions to violent assaults, arson attacks, and desecration of Hindu religious sites. These incidents have sparked widespread attention on social media and drawn responses from law enforcement, local authorities, and Hindu organisations.

Several states in India, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Assam, and Maharashtra, reported crimes involving harassment, sexual assault, and coercion targeting Hindus, often linked with attempts at religious conversion. These episodes coincided with reports from Bangladesh, where Hindu households and temples faced violence and intimidation, revealing cross-border dimensions of communal unrest. Social media activity further amplified awareness of these events, highlighting concerns over religious freedom, minority rights, and safety.

The detailed incidents from December 22 to December 28, 2025, are given below.

Moradabad Case of Harassment, Conversion Pressure

A case involving a Dalit young woman in the Majhola police station area of Moradabad has drawn attention following allegations made by the woman against two local youths. The woman has alleged that after an FIR was registered in a molestation case, the accused began pressuring her to change her religion and issued threats of abduction. According to the woman, the incident began when she accused two youths from her village of entering her house and molesting her. Based on her complaint, Majhola police registered an FIR and later filed a challan against the two accused under sections 126 and 135.

The woman released a video on social media demanding strict action against the accused. In the video, she claimed that the accused are pressuring her to convert her religion and are attempting to silence her through threats and intimidation. Police, however, stated that a separate case exists involving the complainant’s brother. According to the police version, action was taken in June against the woman’s brother in connection with an alleged rape case involving the sister of one of the accused. An incident of arson was reported on 22 December 2025 in Raozan, Chittagong district of Bangladesh, where a Hindu family’s house was set ablaze. According to local accounts, the attackers locked the family inside the house before setting it on fire. A handwritten banner containing threatening messages was found near the site after the incident. The banner warned members of the local Hindu community to stop their activities and movements, alleging that they were acting against Islam and the Muslim community, and cautioned of serious consequences if the warning was not followed. The victims were identified as Jayanti Sangha and Babu Shukushil, expatriates who owned the house. Local residents stated that the family managed to escape by cutting through a fence during the fire. The house was completely destroyed, with household items and furniture reduced to ashes, and the family’s pets reportedly killed in the blaze. No fatalities were reported among the family members.

Local residents alleged that the attack was carried out by a group of Muslim assailants. No individuals have been officially identified or arrested in connection with the incident as of the reported date, and the case status remains unclear. Authorities have not publicly released further details regarding the investigation.

Western Media Coverage Questioned After Reporting on Murder of Hindu Man in Bangladesh

Concerns were raised on 22 December 2025 regarding the manner in which a Western media outlet reported the murder of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man killed in Bangladesh earlier that month. Dipu Chandra Das, a textile factory worker from Mymensingh, was killed on 18 December 2025 following allegations of blasphemy. Video footage of the incident circulated publicly, and reports from Bangladesh described the killing as a mob attack linked to the allegation.

Several days later, an article on the incident was published by the New York Times. The Report downplayed the nature of the killing and framed it within a broader discussion of regional religious intolerance rather than focusing on the specific circumstances of the murder. They also objected to the language used in the article, which referred to the attackers as co workers and linked the incident to unrelated cases of violence elsewhere in South Asia. Those raising concerns claimed that the coverage failed to clearly identify the perpetrators or acknowledge the religious dimension cited in local reporting. The New York Times has not issued a public clarification in response to these criticisms, and no official position has been recorded addressing the allegations of biased or incomplete reporting.

Cambodian authorities maintained that the idol fell within their jurisdiction.

Hindu Community Abused and Sacred Symbol Used in Political Rhetoric at VCK Meeting in Madurai

A public meeting of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was held at Thirupparankundram in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, on 22 December 2025. During the event, statements and slogans were made that targeted the Hindu community, and a revered Hindu religious symbol, the Vel associated with Lord Murugan, was used in a political context. The meeting was attended by VCK president and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Thol Thirumavalavan, a political ally of the DMK-Congress alliance. According to videos circulated in news media, VCK leaders presented Thol Thirumavalavan with a Vel and a crown on stage. Speakers described the Vel not as a religious symbol of worship but as a political emblem representing social justice, caste annihilation, and equality. During these presentations, speakers and members of the crowd stated that the Vel would be used to “drive away Sanatana forces,” which they described as Hindu forces, and these statements were accompanied by applause and slogan chanting. Reports further stated that VCK leaders from the Madurai southern and suburban districts took turns presenting the Vel and the crown. During the event, slogans such as “we will chase them away” were raised, along with references to confronting “Sanatana gangs.” Speakers also referred to Hindus as “religious extremist groups” and made statements that were described as threatening toward the Hindu community.

The meeting took place following a recent controversy over the Karthigai Deepam ritual at Thirupparankundram Hill in Madurai. Hindu devotees had earlier been disallowed from performing the traditional Karthigai Deepam ritual at the site. Following petitions filed by devotees, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court ruled on 1 December 2025 that the Karthigai Deepam lamp could be lit on the ancient stone pillar at Thirupparankundram Hill, locally known as the Deepathoon.
