In a major counter-terrorism operation, Sopore Police on Wednesday launched a coordinated crackdown across multiple locations in Police District Sopore, targeting individuals and premises linked with the proscribed organisation Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), which remains banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

According to official sources, simultaneous raids were conducted at over 30 locations across Sopore, Zaingeer, and Rafiabad areas, with the active assistance of other security agencies. These extensive search operations were based on credible intelligence inputs suggesting that certain JeI-linked elements were attempting to revive their organisational structure and activities under new names and fronts.

During the raids, police recovered a large cache of incriminating material, including documents, digital devices, and printed content containing references and links to the banned organisation. The seized material is now under forensic and technical scrutiny to establish its nature and possible connections to ongoing or planned unlawful activities.

Officials confirmed that several individuals were detained and are currently being questioned to determine their role in the suspected attempts to rejuvenate JeI’s influence in the region. Investigations are also focusing on identifying financial and logistical networks that may have been aiding these efforts.

Police sources emphasised that the operation is part of Sopore Police’s broader preventive and intelligence-driven strategy to dismantle terror and separatist ecosystems in the Kashmir Valley. The crackdown aims to disrupt the ideological, financial, and logistical channels that fuel extremist tendencies and exploit local sentiments for subversive agendas.

Sopore Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, asserting that such actions are purely preventive in nature and necessary to ensure that no organisation or individual is allowed to disturb the prevailing security environment. Authorities reiterated that similar intelligence-led operations will continue in the coming weeks as part of their ongoing efforts to eliminate any traces of radical or separatist influence.

A senior police official stated, “The objective is not only to act against individuals but to completely dismantle the networks that sustain such banned outfits. We are determined to ensure lasting peace and protect the community from being misled or exploited.”

The massive crackdown in Sopore is seen as part of a series of sustained security operations being conducted across Jammu and Kashmir to prevent the resurgence of banned groups and their ideological networks.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) was banned in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for its alleged links with extremist and separatist activities. The organisation has been accused of supporting militancy and spreading radical ideology. Security agencies intensified their monitoring of JeI-linked networks after several investigations suggested their involvement in activities indirectly connected with terror funding and recruitment.

The present crackdown in Sopore comes in the wake of heightened security measures following the recent Delhi Fort blast, which claimed at least 12 lives and prompted nationwide vigilance along with a renewed focus on dismantling networks suspected of aiding extremist groups. The Sopore operation thus marks another firm step in the government’s ongoing campaign to neutralise threats to peace and security in the region.
