Karur Stampede: Tamil Nadu BJP accuses CM Stalin acting to protect TVK, blasts DMK with 12 questions

CM M.K. Stalin did not visit earlier tragedy sites such as the illicit liquor deaths in Kallakurichi, the Vengaivayal human faeces-in-water-tank incident affecting a Dalit colony, the five deaths during the Marina air show melee, or react to the 25 lock-up deaths. Why did he pay special attention only to the Karur incident?

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran has raised 12 pointed questions to the DMK government in the aftermath of the Karur stampede that occurred during an event organised by the fledgling TVK party, floated by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay. The incident claimed 41 lives, including those of children, women, and youths. The BJP and others have blamed the state government, the police, as well as TVK for the unfortunate tragedy.

They noted: “Disturbing eyewitness accounts, with claims that unidentified individuals infiltrated the rally and that some miscreants allegedly used knives to injure attendees, cannot be ignored.” These shocking revelations were shared with an eight-member NDA MPs’ team, led by Hema Malini, constituted by BJP National President JP Nadda.

On 30 September 2025, TN BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, former state president K. Annamalai, and other leaders met the MPs’ team and submitted their findings and testimonies related to the tragic incident. Annamalai also introduced a female eyewitness who had been present at the rally and gave a harrowing account of the chaos that unfolded.

Taking to his social media platform X, Nainar Nagenthran raised 12 questions to the ruling DMK regarding the stampede tragedy.

He wrote: “12 Questions to the Chief Minister Regarding the Karur Incident! Yesterday, we met and interacted with the victims affected by the crowd chaos in Karur, along with the fact-finding committee formed by our @BJP4India, comprising Members of Parliament. It is impossible to describe the impact that each victim’s voice left on our hearts. After thoroughly discussing and clearly understanding this issue, I wish to raise 12 questions that arose in my mind to the Chief Minister, Mr. @mkstalin.”

கரூர் சம்பவம் குறித்து முதல்வருக்கு 12 கேள்விகள்!

The 12 questions posed by Nagenthran are as follows:

  1. When the Karur bus stand roundabout was exclusively earmarked for events attended by the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, why was it not given to other political parties, including TVK?
  2. Videos reveal that a slipper was thrown at Vijay and a lathi charge was carried out on supporters. Some even claimed they were stabbed with a knife. Beyond these incidents, what were the reasons for the tense and panic conditions?
  4. Why did the DMK government act with such extraordinary haste to suppress the truth after the stampede?
  5. Why is the DMK government so quick to stifle voices by filing cases against 25 people and arresting four, including journalist Felix Gerald?
  6. Police accused Vijay of misjudging crowd size at 10,000. Why did they themselves fail to assess it accurately?
  7. If the government believed Vijay’s late arrival could cause unrest, why was the event not cancelled?
  8. It is clear that the police force deployed was grossly inadequate. How many were actually deployed? Why was the district superintendent of police absent from Karur during such a major political rally?
  9. While shortcomings on the government’s side are evident, why has no action been taken against district officials such as the Collector or SP? Is there a fear that hidden truths may come out?
  10. Why is the head of the inquiry commission making statements that appear to cover up DMK’s law-and-order failures even before submitting the report? Videos show police officers behind the panel signalling witnesses not to speak. How will the panel get true facts?
  11. Who authorised the Revenue Secretary to issue public statements about the ongoing inquiry? Does this not compromise the impartiality of the investigation? Is it proper to use competent government officials as pawns of the DMK?
  12. The DMK government transferred the Ajithkumar lock-up death case to the CBI. Why is it not ready to hand over the Karur case as well?

Nainar Nagenthran asserted: “It is abundantly clear, beyond any doubt, that this tragedy is a disaster caused by the administrative failure of the DMK government. That is why we demand a CBI inquiry, having no faith in a single-member commission. I trust that you, Chief Minister Mr. @mkstalin, will heed this demand and provide answers to the questions I have raised on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu.”

Another intriguing development is the reaction of the Foreign Affairs Spokesperson of the People’s Republic of China, Guo Jiakun. He expressed condolences over the deaths in the stampede. This raises the question: “What is the relation between TVK and China?”

Meanwhile, a circulating WhatsApp post (reportedly by a TVK supporter) raised its own set of questions:

Was it truly a stampede or part of a conspiracy?
Who cut the power supply?
Why were there not enough policemen?
Who ordered the baton charge?
Why were the public lathi-charged?
Who threw the slipper?
Why did an empty ambulance enter the crowd while Joseph Vijay was speaking?
When TVK had requested a venue for 80,000 people, why was it rejected in favour of a narrow space?
Who first informed the CM after the mishap?
How did ministers and media reach the hospital within half an hour?
Why no casualties in rallies with over 15 lakh attendees, but here such tragedy?
How did the intelligence wing fail to gauge the crowd and necessary police force in advance?

The post concludes: “Truth will emerge soon.”
