In a dramatic political turn, K Kavitha resigned from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and her MLC post on Wednesday, just a day after being suspended from the party. The move intensifies tensions within the KCR family and highlights deeper fissures within the party.

The BRS suspended Kavitha with immediate effect on Tuesday, citing anti-party activities that were damaging the party’s interests. “The party leadership is taking this matter seriously. The recent behavior and ongoing anti-party activities of party MLC K Kavitha are damaging the BRS. Party President K Chandrasekhar Rao has taken a decision to suspend K Kavitha from the party with immediate effect,” the party stated on X.

At a press conference flanked by her supporters, Kavitha targeted her cousin and former minister T Harish Rao, accusing him of conspiring against her father, KCR, and undermining the family’s political standing. She suggested that her father was under “pressure” to act against her.

Kavitha said, “I never aspired for any posts. I am sending a resignation letter to the Legislative Council chairman and also resigning from primary membership of BRS to KCR.” She also warned her brother, K T Rama Rao, the BRS Working President, to be cautious of Harish Rao’s alleged conspiracies, claiming he did not support her during a “malicious campaign” launched against her.

The former MP also linked the CBI probe into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram irrigation project to the corruption of her cousins Harish Rao and Santosh Rao, implying internal sabotage within the party.

Kavitha clarified that she is not joining any political party at present, and said her future political course would be decided after discussions with her supporters.

TPCC President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud, reacting to Kavitha’s suspension, said she has spoken a mix of harsh truths and lies, calling her resignation a welcome move. He alleged that during BRS’s ten years in power, Kavitha was part of every major decision and shared responsibility for corruption. If she had quit five years earlier, people might have believed her, he added, but her present fight is only due to disputes over sharing spoils within the KCR family.

He called it a new drama staged by KCR’s family to mislead people, questioning why the arrow first aimed at KTR has now turned against Harish Rao. Mahesh Kumar said Congress stands with the people, unlike Kavitha who, after “looting and hiding wealth,” now speaks of morality. He dismissed her allegations against CM Revanth Reddy, predicted BRS would not survive till the next elections, and asked why Kavitha changed her stand soon after returning from America.

K. Kavitha began her political journey by setting up Telangana Jagruthi in 2006, went on to win the Nizamabad Lok Sabha seat in 2014, and later became an MLC in 2020. A defeat in the 2019 elections, corruption allegations including the Delhi liquor case, and widening family disputes weakened her position. These tensions ended with her suspension from BRS and her resignation as MLC on 3 September 2025.
