In a significant breakthrough that potentially averted a major tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh Police, in coordination with the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), arrested two suspected terrorists in Baghpat and seized a massive cache of 200 kilograms of explosives from a Delhi-bound bus. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Uzair and Mohammad Shahnawaz, both residents of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

According to officials, the arrests were made late on the night of August 25 following an intelligence tip-off about suspicious movement involving a public transport vehicle. Acting swiftly, a joint team of the UP Police and ATS intercepted the bus at a checkpoint near Baghpat town. During the search, police recovered several packets of high-grade explosive material concealed in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

The explosives, reportedly packed in multiple containers, were hidden among regular passenger baggage to avoid detection. Preliminary reports suggest the material was powerful enough to cause large-scale destruction had it been used in a populated area.

Uzair and Shahnawaz, both in their late twenties, are currently being interrogated by ATS officers. Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Kotwali police station in Baghpat under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosives Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The legal process is being handled with urgency, given the severity of the case.

The bus in which the explosives were being transported has also been seized. Authorities are questioning the driver and conductor to ascertain whether they had any knowledge of the contraband or were unwitting accomplices.

In the aftermath of the seizure, the UP Police have issued a statewide alert and increased security measures across key transit points and public transport networks. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, particularly along the UP-Delhi corridor. Coordination with Delhi Police and national intelligence agencies is ongoing to assess potential threats and track any other individuals who may be linked to the arrested suspects.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the swift action by the UP Police and ATS, stating that the officers’ vigilance and timely response had potentially saved countless lives. “This is a strong message to those who attempt to disturb the peace in our state. Uttar Pradesh will not tolerate terrorism in any form,” he said in a press briefing.
