Kerala: Goa Governor urges building a generation of strength and clarity at Balagokulam’s Golden Jubilee celebrations

Founded during the time of the Emergency in 1975, Balagokulam has grown from a humble beginning to a global movement, with recognition from the United Nations-backed Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), a body affiliated with UNICEF

The 50th annual conference of Uttar Kerala Balagokulam, the largest children centric movement in the world, was inaugurated virtually by Goa Governor P. S. Sreedharan Pillai on July 12 at Palakkad. The Governor hailed Bharat’s cultural and economic resurgence and expressed confidence that the country would become a developed nation within the next two decades.

The golden jubilee celebrations began with a symbolic lamp-lighting ceremony, where 50 children lit 50 traditional lamps to mark the 50-year journey of Balagokulam. In his address, Governor Pillai said, “Bharat gives light to the entire world. No other nation can match the civilisational depth and heritage of Bharat. Today, we are progressing rapidly across all sectors, and by the centenary of our independence, Bharat will become the world’s leading economic force.”

Founded during the time of the Emergency in 1975, Balagokulam has grown from a humble beginning to a global movement, with recognition from the United Nations-backed Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), a body affiliated with UNICEF.

Governor Pillai also reflected on the ideological shifts in the state, warning against the continued influence of Marxist thought. “Marxism, a foreign ideology, has spread in Kerala through various forms of intellectual conditioning. It is nothing less than an ideological invasion,” he remarked.

He concluded by urging children to rise above challenges. “Children must have dreams—and they must be big. Only then can they reach their targets. Arrogance and pride should be avoided; humility is key. Read, learn, and gather knowledge. Most importantly, children should understand what they truly need.”

Inaugurating the delegates’ session, former Director General of Police Dr Jacob Thomas IPS (Retd) underlined the role of Balagokulam in nurturing resilient and value-based future citizens. “Today’s children face a multitude of challenges. Balagokulam must rise as a transformative force, especially in Kerala, to prepare a generation equipped with strength, humility, and clarity of purpose,” he said.

Reflecting on the past, Dr Jacob Thomas said that the Emergency of 1975 was the worst disaster in Bharat’s history. “That year, the Constitution was amended to serve someone’s agenda. ‘Socialism’ and ‘Secularism’ were inserted without democratic discussion. It was in such a year that Balagokulam was born, yet the movement witnessed unprecedented growth.”

The Balagokulam conference serves as a platform to reaffirm the movement’s mission to instil cultural pride, discipline, and self-confidence among children across Bharat and beyond.
