Patna: Youtuber and journalist Ajit Anjum has been booked for allegedly obstructing the government work during the ongoing voter revision drive in Bihar’s Begusarai district.

An FIR was registered against Anjum after a Booth Level Officer (BLO) Ansarul Haq, accused him of unauthorized entry at the block auditorium, causing disruption during the voter Enumeration Form uploading process.

According to reports, the incident took place on July 12 when Anjum along with his cameraperson reportedly barged into the block auditorium and started questioning the BLO uploading the forms.

In the complaint filed, BLO Ansarul Haq has alleged Anjum for confronting him with questions like how many voters are at your booth? How many forms he had distributed and collected back? How many Muslim voters at your booth? How many submitted forms with documents?

In reply to Anjum’s queries, the BLO informed him clearly that his booth has 1020 voters and forms have been duly distributed and collected. Anjum however was allegedly focused on the narrative that Muslim voters are being harassed which was completely false, alleged BLO Haq in his complaint.

Haq further alleged that Anjum delayed the form uploading process by an hour, causing obstruction in the work.

Following the complaint, a case under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was filed against Anjum and the matter is being probed further.

Election Commission of India (ECI) is conducting a voter revision drive in Bihar ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled to be held in October-November this year.

The Commission in an official statement on July 14 informed that around 83 per cent Enumeration Forms have already been collected in the poll-bound state with 11 more days remaining in the drive.

With 11 more days left for the last date of submission of the filled Enumeration Forms (EFs) in the ongoing Bihar SIR, after two rounds of door-to-door visits by the BLOs, out of the 7,89,69,844 electors in Bihar, EFs of 6,60,67,208 or 83.66% have been collected. The ECI aims to publish the draft roll of the voter revision exercise on August 2 before rolling out the final overhauled electoral list by September 30.

The ECI drive has stirred a major political controversy in the state with opposition leaders raising concern over the voter revision, claiming that it will remove a large chunk of voters, particularly from the marginalized sections.

Leaders from several opposition parties also filed petition before the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the ongoing drive. The court however allowed the drive to continue with next hearing schedule in the last week of July.

The NDA leaders on the other hand have backed the ECI’s move, stating that the drive will remove fake voters whose name should not be there in the voter list.

The Commission through the revision exercise aims to ensure inclusion of every eligible voter of the state in the overhauled list while removing the ineligible one’s at the same time.
