She became a widow at the young age of 29 after her husband, Khanderao, was killed at the battle of Kumbher in 1754. Malhar Rao, Ahilyabai’s father-in-law, prevented her from doing Sati when it was scheduled. Malhar Rao Holkar had been her closest ally at the time. But Ahilyabai’s dominion collapsed like a deck of cards when her father-in-law passed away in 1766, just 12 years after the death of his son Khanderao. Consider a woman who, after losing her husband in combat, lost her lone ally a few years later. Many emperors were getting ready for combat. There were also adversaries within. She wasn’t afraid, but there was a lot of animosity when she came forward. The queen was named “The Philosopher Queen” by British historian John Keay. In a nation that has seen many brave queens, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar’s legacy is unparalleled due to her incredible 30-year reign, which left a lasting imprint and source of inspiration.
