NEW DELHI: Zohran Zohran Mamdani, the Muslim Mayor of New York City, is at the centre of a major controversy. The main reason for the controversy is Mamdani’s strong opposition to the arrival in New York of Dr. Mohan Bhagwat, the Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and to his proposed public programme. Mamdani has openly opposed the ‘Universal Oneness’ programme, scheduled to be held at New York’s historic Madison Square Garden on 29 August 2026. At a press conference on 25 August, he clearly stated that his administration does not support the rally.
In fact, following this move, several Indian thinkers and diaspora Hindu organisations have regarded it as yet another indication of Mamdani’s ‘anti-Hindu mindset’ and his ‘soft stance towards extremist forces’. At the same time, accusations such as him ‘dreaming of Ghazwa-e-Hind’ are also being levelled against him on social media.

Madison Square Garden Controversy and Opposition to the RSS
The purpose of RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to New York is to share the message of Indian philosophy, unity and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) at the global level. Meanwhile, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is opposing the event, describing it as divisive. Mamdani sees an ‘exclusionary vision’ in the RSS. He does not accept defining nationalism on the basis of religion. He is promoting the view that the RSS’s ideological concept of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ is contrary to India’s secular Constitution and pluralistic framework. Based on this Western and Left-wing narrative, he views the Sangh’s ideology as ‘Right-wing majoritarianism’ and opposes it.
Mamdani: Soft Stance and Bias Towards Extremism
Although Mamdani may describe himself as progressive, there are several instances in both the United States and India to substantiate claims about his ‘extremist leanings’ and selective politics. Since becoming mayor, several of his decisions have strengthened this perception:
• Support for the BDS movement: As soon as he took office in January 2026, he removed restrictions imposed on the ‘BDS movement’, which calls for the economic and cultural boycott of Israel, causing New York’s large Jewish community to become extremely angry with him. He was accused of promoting ‘Antisemitism’.
• Silence on violent slogans: He has consistently avoided explicitly condemning aggressive and violent slogans such as “Globalise the Intifada” raised at pro-Palestinian rallies, which have also been regarded as dangerous by American human rights organisations.
• Hosting controversial guests: He hosted Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil at his official residence, ‘Gracie Mansion’, who has repeatedly faced allegations of holding extremist ideology and having links with terrorists. Because of such episodes, the Republican Party and American media often refer to him as a “radical Leftist” or a “sympathiser of extremists”.

The Left-wing Mamdani Hates the RSS’s Social Role
A large section of the Indian community and global thinkers questions why Mamdani remains silent about organisations that are internationally banned or involved in violent activities, while targeting an organisation such as the RSS. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is a cultural and social organisation in India which has always stood at the forefront whenever the country has faced a disaster. During floods, earthquakes, the coronavirus pandemic or any natural disaster, Sangh volunteers come forward to undertake relief and rescue operations.
In addition, the Sangh runs thousands of schools and hospitals in the fields of education and service, but Mamdani completely ignores this positive and social aspect and attempts to tarnish the image of the Sangh solely on the basis of the global Left-wing narrative, which reflects his prejudice.
Use of Islamic Symbols on Public Platforms
Mamdani, who describes himself as secular, often openly promotes Islamic religious symbols and scriptures under the framework of ‘Identity Politics’, despite living within America’s secular political system. In February 2026, while defending New York’s Sanctuary City Policy, he cited the journey of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina (‘Hijrah’) and verses from the Quran before the US Congress and on public platforms.

In addition, conservative Americans have also described his administration’s decision to officially promote ‘World Hijab Day’ as a form of appeasement politics. In such circumstances, when a politician repeatedly uses the scriptures of one particular religion to justify his political decisions, it is natural that this should be called not ‘representation’, but ‘religious propagation’ and ‘vote-bank politics’.
Interference in India’s Internal Affairs and Sovereignty
The extent of the matter is such that Zohran Mamdani’s opposition to Hindus and the Sangh is not confined to New York; he has also intervened in India’s internal and legal affairs. In January 2026, along with other US lawmakers, he issued a letter in support of Umar Khalid, an accused imprisoned under the UAPA in connection with the Delhi riots in India, and demanded his release. Similarly, Mamdani’s stance on opponents of the CAA in India, certain sections of the farmers’ movement and the Kashmir issue has consistently challenged India’s sovereignty, exposing his ‘anti-India’ mindset.
Strong Reaction from New York’s Indian-American Community
There is deep anger among the Indian-American community living in New York and surrounding states such as New Jersey and Connecticut over Mamdani’s statement regarding the Madison Square Garden event. A majority of immigrants and several organisations such as the ‘Hindu American Foundation’ (HAF) and the ‘Coalition of Hindus of North America’ (CoHNA) have described Mamdani’s statement as ‘Hinduphobic’ (anti-Hindu).

They say that New York is a city known for its cultural diversity, where every community has the freedom to organise its events. In such circumstances, targeting this event by the mayor directly hurts the religious sentiments of Hindu citizens of New York. On the other hand, there are Islamic organisations such as the ‘Indian American Muslim Council’ (IAMC), which are openly supporting Mayor Mamdani’s stance.
A Global Arena for Ideological Polarisation
Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Zohran Mamdani and the programme of RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat is, in reality, a direct opposition to India’s nationalist and cultural ideology, which is moving forward with the message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. In addition, Western progressive-Left politics today, in the name of human rights and the rights of minorities, particularly Muslims, places the established systems and majority communities of developing countries in the dock.

Mamdani’s policies, the selection of his statements and his strong opposition to the RSS establish him, in the eyes of traditional Indian and Hindu society, as a controversial and biased politician. He is completely ‘Hinduphobic’ (anti-Hindu), which is why he has begun efforts to completely block, under the guise of secularism, the programme of Dr Mohan Bhagwat, the Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, scheduled to take place in New York City on August 29.
