Tamil Nadu: YouTuber Mansoor Ali arrested for spreading fake news linking BJP functionary to Pahalgam terror attack

After video went viral, Tiruchi Cyber Crime Police filed a case under various sections of BNS and the IT (Amendment) Act, 2008, and was arrested

For the first time, the DMK government’s police have acted against a YouTuber, while leaving others close to the party or aligned with its agenda untouched. They also denied permission to install an LED screen to watch the Prime Minister’s monthly Mann ki Baat programme on Sunday, and prohibited carrying candlelights in processions or lighting moksha deepam in memory of massacred Hindus.

Reports say 26-year-old Mansoor Ali, a resident of Jinnah Street near Nandarshah Mosque in Valluvar Nagar, Trichy, posted a video falsely claiming that a Dalit man named Thalib Hussain Shah — allegedly affiliated with the BJP IT wing in Jammu and Kashmir — had been arrested for involvement in the recent Pahalgam terror attack and had links to a banned terrorist organisation.

After the video went viral on social media, Head Constable Rajasekar of the Tiruchi Cyber Crime Police filed a complaint. Based on this, a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, and he was arrested. This is the first arrest of a minority individual for making false claims.

Mansoor Ali was already facing a pending case filed by the Tiruchi Metropolitan Crime Branch for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Hindu deity Rama and the Rama Setu (Adam’s Bridge) on social media.

Critics point out the partiality of the police, noting that YouTubers like Senthil and SundraValli, as well as VCK head Thol Thirumavalavan, who also made highly condemnable, anti-India and pro-Pakistan statements regarding the Pahalgam terror incident, remain untouched due to their proximity to the ruling party.

Advocate K Ashoke stated that he had submitted complaints against SundraValli in October 2020 and again in December 2020. The court directed the police to file a final report on FIR 25/21 registered by them. He hopes the court will deliver a fitting verdict against her.

One netizen questioned whether the police would arrest Seepu Senthil for his anti-national rants.

The DMK government, which previously denied permission to the Prime Minister to hold a 2024 Lok Sabha rally in Coimbatore; to the annual RSS route march; to Vinayagar Chathurthi idol installations and immersions; to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony for the consecration of the Ram Lalla idol in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir (January 22, 2024); and to meetings by VHP, Hindu Munnani, and BJP citing law and order concerns or the presence of churches, mosques, or minority-dominated areas, has now also denied BJP permission to install an LED screen in Chepauk (Deputy CM Udhayanidhi’s assembly constituency). The organisers had submitted a written request well in advance.

The selective action of the DMK-led police is evident. While police across the country permitted candlelight marches and protests condemning the terror attack, in Theni, police prevented protestors from burning Pakistan’s national flag. Critics ask: what objection could there be to burning the enemy nation’s flag?

In Arumuganeri in Thoothukudi district, Hindu Munnani Sabha had pasted posters related to the Pahalgam terror attack. However, police on night patrol on 24 April removed all the posters. Reacting to this,  a local Ram Kumar questioned whether the police have any direct links to Pakistani terrorists. “Our posters were against terrorism. We demand that the Superintendent of Police and the NIA investigate this incident.”

In Palani, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, police removed posters and banners and refused permission for a candlelight march. A BJP functionary was seen arguing with a police officer over the matter.

In Tenkasi too, police removed posters pasted on walls. They have allowed pro-Palestine rallies and other demonstrations linked to minority communities — so why act partially when it comes to Hindus?

In Tirunelveli and other locations, moksha deepam was lit for the sadgati (salvation) of those killed in the terror attack.

‘Tamil Pokkisham’ channel’s Vickneswaran, a nationalist thinker and YouTuber known for his sharp geopolitical analyses from an Indian perspective, is now facing a smear campaign. Dravidianism sympathisers — some of whom have previously expressed support for violent jihadist ideologies — began portraying Vickneswaran as spreading anti-Muslim propaganda. After he released a detailed six-part video series explaining the sequence of events around the Pahalgam attack using verified news sources and reports, he became the target of a coordinated smear campaign.

In Tirupur, too, the police denied permission to pay homage to the departed souls in the terror attack.

Meanwhile, the police have taken no action against those responsible for the smear campaign, leaving Vickneswaran to face it alone. It appears the police have time only to act against social media critics, BJP members, Hindu organisations, or those who comment against minorities.

Following the Centre’s decision to cancel visas of Pakistani nationals, reports suggest Tamil Nadu has over 200 Pakistani citizens, most of whom are in Chennai, claiming to be here for treatment or professional purposes.

Another shocking revelation is that over 46,000 foreigners have overstayed in Tamil Nadu after the expiry of their visas. Recently, Madras High Court Judge Dhandapani noted that many of them are residing in Tirupur, Coimbatore, and other districts and are employed in local units. They hail from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and various African countries. Speaking at an event discussing crimes against women, he said the presence of these individuals poses a threat and urged that they be deported to their home countries on a war footing.

Meanwhile, NTK leader Seeman, Dravidar Kazhagam, VCK’s Thirumavalavan, DMK-backed SundraValli, DMK supporters, YouTubers, IT wings, DMK-controlled TV channels, and social media activists are blaming the Centre for failing to prevent the attack. They oppose any retaliatory action against Pakistan — including the suspension of Indus River water supply to the country.

However, the presence of such a large number of foreign nationals is a serious threat to national security. These individuals continue to receive support from Dravidianists, anti-national elements, and fringe groups.
