The Hindu Munnani has strongly criticised the Christian religious proselytisation at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, accusing efforts to convert patients by claiming that “Jesus will cure your illness.”
The Hindu rights group raised concerns that such actions not only undermine trust in the institution but also have the potential to stir religious tensions in the area. They have called for legal action to be taken against those responsible for these activities within the hospital premises.
This condemnation follows an incident on March 1, 2025, when a Christian nun reportedly visited the hospital, praying for patients in the fracture treatment unit and attempting to convert them. The Hindu Munnani criticized the administration’s failure to act against such proselytization efforts. They warned that if no action is taken, they will initiate a campaign to promote Hinduism within the hospital, aiming to encourage the swift recovery of patients.
In a social media post, the Hindu Munnani expressed strong disapproval, stating, “Christian Propaganda at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital… Hindu Munnani strongly condemns. A Christian conversion campaign is ongoing at the hospital. A few years ago, during a similar campaign, the administration took no action. When the Hindu Munnani tried to promote Hinduism, the hospital put up a notice banning preaching on the premises. However, following a change in the hospital dean, this notice has vanished. Now, Christian priests, nuns, and religious workers regularly enter the hospital to preach to patients, claiming, ‘Jesus will cure your illness. Pray to Jesus, we are praying for you.’”

The statement further added, “On March 1, 2025 at 6 pm, a Christian nun was seen praying for the conversion of patients in the fracture treatment unit. This type of propaganda, claiming that Jesus will heal patients, not only erodes trust in the medical profession and doctors but also targets vulnerable Hindu patients seeking treatment for conversion. Additionally, it poses a risk of inciting religious tensions within the hospital, potentially leading to law and order issues. If the Christian conversion campaign at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital is not halted immediately, the Hindu Munnani will begin visiting the hospital ward by ward, praying for the speedy recovery of patients, applying Vibhuti and Kumkum, singing devotional songs, and offering prayers for their well-being. The Hindu Munnani urges the Tamil Nadu government and the Tirunelveli city police to take swift action against the Dean, the resident doctors, and hospital security personnel for allowing the hospital to become a venue for religious propaganda. They must halt this conversion campaign and protect patients from any potential religious conflict or law and order issues.”
