As an alarming development, Tamil Nadu has been witnessing numerous incidents of sexual assault, harassment, abuse, abduction, and related crimes against children and women. Under the Dravidian model’s women empowerment regime, the safety of women, particularly children, remains a major concern.

These are only the reported incidents. Many survivors or their families conceal cases to avoid social stigma, due to police apathy, or out of fear of threats from the perpetrators. Critics argue that the hands of the police are tied due to the involvement of many ‘Sirs’—a term that emerged during the Anna University sexual assault case, referring to politically powerful men with strong connections.

According to Sanghi Prince, a social media activist who has been arrested multiple times by the DMK government, “Sexual assaults and harassment cases are increasing in schools. When will the Education Minister pay attention to these issues? Most of the accused belong to the DMK party. If he takes action, the entire DMK party will end up in prison.”

A 38-year-old grocery shop (kirana) owner, Manikandan from Chengipatti, Thanjavur, sexually harassed a 15-year-old girl whenever she visited his shop. Police arrested him under POCSO last week.

A netizen posted on X that within 36 hours (from the 12th), 18 cases of harassment and rape—14 involving minors and four involving women—were reported, proving that the state is becoming increasingly unsafe for women and children.

Government Response and Legal Action

The Tamil Nadu BJP has moved the Madras High Court, seeking action to curb the increasing sexual crimes against women and children. They pointed out the lack of POCSO courts in all districts and highlighted that most accused individuals are teachers.

The AIADMK held a protest on 18th February against the DMK government’s failure to prevent sexual assaults on women and children.

The Tamil Nadu government is considering amending prison rules, ensuring that convicts sentenced for rape or POCSO-related crimes will no longer be eligible for premature release.
