Tamil Nadu crime surge: Rising sexual crimes put DMK govt under scanner ahead of Assembly polls

A surge in crimes against women and children across Tamil Nadu, particularly over the past two years, has intensified concerns over law and order, placing the DMK government and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who holds the Home portfolio under sharp political scrutiny just days before the Assembly elections.

Crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu have come under sharp focus, with a series of disturbing incidents reported across districts over the past few days, raising serious concerns over the state’s law-and-order situation, ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In Salem’s Sangagiri near Edapadi, a 15-year-old girl allegedly ended her life at her residence by committing suicide by hanging on March 22.

According to media and police sources, N. Sathish Kumar (33), a resident within Thevoor police station limits, had developed a friendship with the minor girl after separating from his wife due to a family dispute. On March 22, when the girl was alone in her house, Sathish went to meet her. The girl’s uncle, who saw them talking alone in the home, called others to capture him. Enraged by this, Sathish locked the door from the inside. The girl’s relatives and locals broke open the door and took the girl out. On entering, they saw Sathish sitting in the hall while the girl was inside a room. They broke open the door and found that the girl had ended her life.

The relatives attacked Sathish, and he sustained injuries. On hearing this, Thevoor police came to the spot and sent the girl’s body to Edappadi Government Hospital for post-mortem. Sathish was admitted to Salem Government Hospital for treatment.

A Class VIII girl, who went missing from her house on March 21, was found dead in a well in Chetti Alli village near Krishnagiri. Nagarasampatty police retrieved the body of the girl, and later it was found to be from Jauyanur village. She was identified as Shobana (13), daughter of the Pandian-Bhanupriya couple. She was studying at a panchayat union middle school in Marichetti Alli village. Police said, “The girl went out on her bicycle to a friend’s house and did not return. Worried parents went in search of her at the friend’s house she was supposed to be at. They found she had not come to the house and lodged a missing person complaint.”

It is unclear whether she fell accidentally or was pushed into the well. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

In Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, the body of a youngster who went missing 10 days ago was discovered in a decomposed state in a DMK MLA’s quarry. This MLA went viral for kidnapping and attacking the media recently, and he was never arrested, says Annamalai.

Two Tamil television journalists, reporter E. Kathiravan and cameraman R. Sebastian, were attacked and briefly held at a stone quarry in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on January 30, 2026, while investigating alleged illegal mining. Their camera recordings were destroyed. In Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district, police arrested a 19-year-old youth under the POCSO Act on charges of abducting a 17-year-old teen and sexually assaulting her. Women ask whether the DMK government, which could not ensure the safety of girls, has any shame in asking voters to give another chance.

A 64-year-old watchman employed in an apartment complex in Tiruchy was arrested under the POCSO Act on March 20 for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl. The watchman, it is learnt, committed the crime near his security box on the morning of March 20. Acting on a complaint from the parents, he was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Sathyamoorthy, TVK’s joint coordinator in Tirupattur district, was arrested on March 20 under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998, for allegedly sexually harassing a woman government official. It is reported that the accused drove his vehicle dangerously on multiple occasions close to the woman officer’s vehicle as if to cause a collision. He also subjected her to persistent sexual harassment and verbal abuse during her travel.

A 16-year-old migrant worker from Assam was sexually assaulted by two of her co-workers. The Assam native came to Chennai in search of a job at a company in Neelankarai, where she met Ruben (19), the prime accused, six months ago. Both became friends. Ruben invited her to his home at Kottivakkam, where he threatened and raped her. A few days later, he forced her to sleep with his friend, Alan Hussain (19), a native of Nagaland. The duo told her that the sexual assaults were video-recorded and warned her not to raise any issue. If she violated this, the videos would be uploaded on social media. Fearing this, the victim later mustered the courage to approach the police and lodged a complaint. While Ruben was arrested, a search is on for Hussain.

In another shocking incident, police took seven hours to register an FIR under the POCSO Act based on a complaint from the victim’s family. In Ramanathapuram, parents of a 12-year-old girl approached Kizhakkarai police station to register a sexual harassment case. Policemen on duty told them to come later as the Inspector was not in the station. They were made to wait for over seven hours.

Tamil Nadu BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said in a post on X that during the last 23 days, there have been over 50 sexual-related crimes across the state. She said this reflects the efficiency of the DMK rule. People expect a peaceful law-and-order situation ahead of the polls, but instead, the state is witnessing a worsening scenario.

NTK leader Seeman said that several incidents of murder and sexual violence were reported across Tamil Nadu in the past 20 days. He said, “The rise in crime is a sign of moral decline in society, and many offences are being committed under the influence of alcohol. Neither a six-year-old nor a 60-year-old woman is safe in Tamil Nadu.”

Seeman added, “If the law-and-order situation is poor, people also have the responsibility of electing such a government. This has been happening for the past 60 years. If the same powers keep returning, what change will come?”

With Tamil Nadu now just days away from the State Assembly elections, the series of incidents has intensified political scrutiny on the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio. Critics allege that the continuing reports of crimes against women and children particularly over the past two years, with frequent incidents of sexual offences being reported almost daily have emerged as a serious law-and-order concern in the state. The developments are expected to remain a key issue in the electoral discourse as voters head to the polls.
