Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the Tata Group, has categorically denied any affiliation with the ‘India Visionary Leaders Summit: 2025’ and the ‘Ratan Tata National Icon Award 2025,’ scheduled to be held in February 2025. This comes after widespread claims that the Tata Trusts were supporting these events, including the controversial selection of Sheikh Abdul Rashid, an independent Member of Parliament (MP) from Baramulla, Kashmir, to receive the prestigious Ratan Tata National Icon Award 2025.
The statement from Tata Trusts has sent shockwaves through the political and social landscape, especially considering the high-profile figures involved in these events and the sensitive political climate in Kashmir. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, is at the center of this controversy. Rashid, who has long been a contentious figure in Kashmir politics, is currently incarcerated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on charges of terror funding. Despite being behind bars, he has been selected to receive the Ratan Tata National Icon Award 2025 and has been invited as the guest of honor at the India Visionary Leaders Summit.
In an official statement issued recently, Tata Trusts made it clear that they had no connection to the events or the award in question. The Trusts emphasised their complete detachment from the organisers and expressed their concern over the misuse of their name and the name of the late Ratan N Tata, the iconic former Chairman of Tata Group.
“It has been brought to our (Tata Trusts) notice that the ‘India Visionary Leaders Summit: 2025’ and the ‘Ratan Tata National Icon Award 2025’ is being organised in February 2025, and claims are being made that the event(s) are being supported by Tata Trusts. The Tata Trusts would like to categorically state that we have no association with either the event(s) or the Award or its organisers in any form, whatsoever,” the statement read.
Tata Trusts further revealed that they had taken legal steps to prevent the unauthorised use of their name. On December 13, 2024, the Trusts served a legal notice to Dr Rajat Shrivastava, the founder of Delhi Today Group—the organisation behind the events—demanding that Shrivastava cease and desist from associating the Tata Trusts brand and the name of Ratan Tata with the summit and the award. The Trusts warned of possible legal consequences if these demands were ignored, including appropriate legal action as per the due process of law.
Rashid has often used his platform to advocate for Kashmiri autonomy, drawing the ire of many in the Indian political establishment. His critics argue that his actions and rhetoric undermine India’s sovereignty over Kashmir. His continued influence, even from prison, indicates the substantial base of support he commands in the region, despite being embroiled in serious legal battles.
Sheikh Abdul Rashid has secured an impressive lead in the 2025 Lok Sabha elections, where he is on course to defeat former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Rashid, an independent candidate, was led by a significant margin of 2,04,528 votes over Abdullah, according to official Election Commission data.
